The cut-off is March 1st.
The ones I come up with are Grey Gardens and Spring Awakening.
Any plays?

Posted: 2/7/07 at 5:18pmWhat are the eligibility requirements? If I sell tickets for people to watch me stand in my yard and say "Blonde woman" dramatically, can I get nominated for the Pulitzer?

Posted: 2/7/07 at 5:20pmI don't think that Spring Awakening can me nominated, because the play/musical has to be about American life. I could be wrong about that so don't kill me if I am. That having been said I am pretty sure that Sunday in the Park with George was given the award thanks to the 2nd act of the show.

Posted: 2/7/07 at 5:31pmThe story was told from an American perspective. Same with I AM MY OWN WIFE.

Actually, they changed the eligibility cut-off last year, so that it now a full calendar year period, so any production that opened in the US between January 1, 2006 and December 31, 2006 is eligible.

Posted: 2/7/07 at 5:39pmSunday in the Park With George, another winner, was ruled to have been told from an "American perspective" as well. Primarily to do with everything coming together in Act II, I imagine.

The award is for a play by an American author, "preferably original in its source and dealing with American life."
The key word is "preferably," so the Pulitzer jury doesn't HAVE to choose a play about American life, though they usually do. It's the reason they were able to give the award to "The Diary of Ann Frank" back in the 50s despite that having nothing whatsoever to do with "American life."

Posted: 2/7/07 at 8:10pmSA doesn't seem really eligible....aren't the book scenes pretty much straight from the 1891 German play???

But SA's songs voice feelings and concerns of contemporary American teens as well as those of the German school kids.

Posted: 2/7/07 at 8:44pmI dunno...I don't think Spring Awakening has what it takes. If any of the musicals make it, it'd be Grey Gardens, although I think Rabbit Hole stands the best chance this year.

Posted: 2/7/07 at 8:49pmJohn Gallagher should be happy, he's really hit the jackpot this year as far as projects go.

Spring Awakening has nothing to do with America. I doubt it's even eligible. Even if it was, the majority of the text is taken from the place anyway.
Durango was fabulous. I'd love to see that it least be one of the finalists. You never know with the Pulitzer though. Who's on the panel this year?

Posted: 2/8/07 at 1:20amOnly 7 musicals have ever won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It is a rare occurence. Though there does tend to be about one musical each decade that wins the Pulitzer (the last was RENT). So as much as we'd love to toss around SPRING AWAKENING and GREY GARDENS as possibilities, the likelyhood is that, if an award is even given, it will go to a play.

Posted: 2/8/07 at 7:16amI think we can all safely agree that Good Vibrations is a shoo-in for the Pulitzer this year.

Posted: 2/8/07 at 10:13amTom Stoppard was born in the former Czechislovakia and is a naturalized Briton, making him ineligible.
#21re: What shows are Pulitzer eligible?
Posted: 2/8/07 at 10:24amJudging by what has come out, we may have another "no Pulitzer for drama" this year.
#22re: What shows are Pulitzer eligible?
Posted: 2/8/07 at 12:45pmWhat about regionally? I remember The Young Man From Atlanta won a few years before it finally opened on Broadway. I saw the world premiere and didn't understand how it won the prize, but there you go.

Posted: 2/8/07 at 12:53pmTrue, true....maybe 13 or SONIA FLEW have a chance.
#24re: What shows are Pulitzer eligible?
Posted: 2/8/07 at 1:33pmSONIA FLEW actually had a production in NY this year, at the Summer Play Festival. Very good show, but not Pulitzer worthy, IMO. My money is on RABBIT HOLE, but I wouldn't rule out a DURANGO upset.
