If My Fair Lady is an Alan Jay Lerner show then Gypsy is a Stephen Sondheim show.

We still need to be clear what 'popular is'. Is popular, most performed regionally, most performed on Broadway, most well known in the public? If it's most well known in the public then what public are we talking about? (NYC? USA? UK,Australia?)

I personally was talking about USA public. As far as broadway goes,I would say the most popular is Follies or Into the woods.Atleast at the moment.Than again, Gypsy gets revived every couple of years so I guess broadway still hasn't found the perfect gypsy yet.I've read on other threads that people want Amy adams to get her tony award so People want ANOTHER Into the wods revival...

The West side Story revival was very good but I think all the news about performers missing performances really turned people off to the show..We probally won't see that revived for a LONG time.

A fun way to see what show is "most popular at the moment" is watch how many threads pop up about a particular show (sondheim or not).So far Evita is winning by a landslide....

Sorry people but I'm going to still defend my point that Gypy and West Side Story are not really through and through Sondheim shows. For starters, they both have a totally different feel and vibe than the other Sondheim musicals in which the master wrote both music and lyrics. To me when I think Gypsy, first and foremost I think Jule Styne and when I think West Side, first and foremost I think Leonard Bernstein.

I find it bizarre to suggest that Gypsy isn't widey known in Australia.

If I were to write a list of all Sondheim show titles and show them to a bunch of random people, I guarantee you most of them would recognise Gypsy before many of the other titles.

GYPSY is almost never performed here, I don't even know if we have had a professional production before - certainly not recently - as far as I know one was going to be mounted with Geraldine Turner in the 90s, but then was cancelled. There were also rumours of Caroline O'Connor doing GYPSY here soon but those rumours seem to have fallen though.

I assume the only people that would recognise the title of the show are those that are familiar with the Natalie Wood movie. I literally don't know anyone in my life that is familiar with GYPSY (although I am young - 21). I think with the recent SWEENEY movie and with the many amateur and professional productions that the show has had in Australia, Sweeney Todd would be the most popular Sondheim show here (excluding West Side Story). I'd guess all of the other shows, perhaps with the exception of INTO THE WOODS (but even still) would also be practically unknown.
