I know of at least one run - and the notices were not kind. I think it was shelved after that.

It’s always fascinating to me how many shows have out of town tryouts, and then seemingly disappear forever. Like creative teams put in all that work, and then they never get made available for licensing. Sure, some of them needed more work which is why they never made it to Broadway, but there have been PLENTY of shows that made it to Broadway and still needed work haha.

Shows that come to mind with no word of future plans:

The Nutty Professor, Life After, Broadway Bounty Hunter, The Sting, Dave, Roman Holiday, Scotland PA, Benny & Joon, The Flamingo Kid, Marie Dancing Still, Bliss, Octet and sooooo many more

If they aren’t going to make it to Broadway, is it the licensing companies that don’t want the shows??

If we're going down the route of rock musicals (And I'm sure happy that we are), I have to ask, "Whatever happened to that stage adaptation of Operation: Mindcrime by the metal band Queensryche? - Back in, I think it was 2009, there were reports that Adam Pascal was going to spearhead it with support from Queensryche's former frontman/songwriter, Geoff Tate.

Now, I'm completely aware of the fact that neither "Queesnryche" nor "Operation: Mindcrime" are really big enough titles to fill a Broadway theater for any length of time. But, I wish they project would be further developed, even if it was just for more modest stages/licensing purposes. I think the story of a troubled drug addict who gets pulled into a cult of political assassins might actually resonate a bit today.

Broadway Bounty Hunter and Scotland PA both had (short) off-Broadway NYC runs. The former a brief commercial run at the Greenwich House Theatre and the latter at the Roundabout's off-Broadway black box space.

How problematic he's become...lately? Lately?

Yep. And it’s not looking likely that either show is going to transfer to Broadway, so are they gonna end up being available to license or continue to exist only in our memories??

Every step of the process--reading, workshop, OOT-- can be the dead end for a show. i have such respect for shows and their creators that survive the gauntlet and persist over the years.

Oh absolutely!! My point is that I wish it was easier for shows to get produced/licensed, because after all the hard work that goes into them, it’s sad how many shows end up in the graveyards of our minds.

Even if it isn’t “Broadway ready,” I’m sure a bunch of community/high school theaters would still have interest in producing The Nutty Professor for example, because it’s a well-known title, and seems like a fun show.

100% The story should not be how long it took to get to Broadway, but rather that it did.

It is a miracle any original new musicals come to NYC. Those that survive this long process should be celebrated.

Again, you’ve missed my point entirely. I’m saying it should be easier for shows to get produced/licensed, because right now, so many shows that don’t make it to Broadway are never seen again, and that stinks for the creative teams that spent so much time, energy, and talent working on them.

I’m advocating for more people’s work to be seen, and think that shows can have merit, even if they don’t make it to Broadway.

the NYTW cast was incredible. Too bad they missed their Broadway debuts…

At least we have the OBCR (or OOBCR) which they released before the show the started Bway rehearsals.

Saw Outsiders in LaJolla. Thought it needed a lot of work in the story telling. Not sure why, but they took a lot of important dynamics out. I know this an “adaptation” but audiences want to see the story they know and love. Creative teams don’t seem to get this, which is why I think shows based on anything iconic don’t do well. They minimized important characters like Cherry and Two-bit and took others out completely. It made the show not feel whole. The cast and music were awesome so I hope they can work some of this through and it makes it on Broadway.
