Very often, I find the jazz covers of simple showtunes to be the ones that I listen to the most often and the ones that have such a profound effect on me.
Anyone else like the jazz cover of a showtune more than the original tune in its context?
Some of my favorites: Body and Soul, even though its forgotten in its original showtune context and truly belongs to the jazz canon.
but my very very favorite is Coltrane's incredible My Favorite Things.
Anyone else?
I really love Lea Delaria's cover of "The Balad of Sweeney Todd." I don't know if that counts, but it makes me very happy.

It's a pretty awesome cover, I've seen her do it live. Do you know if it's available on an album? I'd love to hear it again.
I'm a HUGE Ella Fitzgerald Fan so pretty much any of the covers she did....
Off the top of my head.....Night and Day.
There's more, I just can't think at this time of night.

Lea Delaria's Welcome to my Party is a close second to:
I Could Have Danced All Night on the My Fair Lady in Jazz CD. Brilliant.
I love Frank Sinatra's "Night & Day" and Sarah Vaughan's "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes"
I didn't know until very recently that it was from a musical, but Feeling Good sung by Nina Simone.

Um, people should maybe watch "a jazz odyssey" on Erich Bergen's profile at the site that must not be named - he and Deven May do a hilarious jazz version of "Do You Hear the People Sing?" from Les Miz at the end...
Ella's Cole Porter album is one of my favorite. Wonderful!
I Could Have Danced All Night
My Favorite Things
and Mack The Knife
Tierney Sutton's: Wouldn't it be Loverly, Show Me, I've Grown Accustomed To His Face, Ding! Dong! The Witch is Dead! all on an album called "Something Cool". Seriously, her Show Me and Ding! Dong! are insaaaaaaaaaaane! Also, Jamie Cullum's Singin' in the Rain and I Could've Danced All Night, on an album called "Twenty-Something". My Fair Lady sounds very popular, I wonder why? And the Lea DeLaria songs mentioned are on "Play it Cool."
Lea's version of Sweeney Todd is actually available on her cd "Play It Cool" -- it is a great cd!
Another one of my favorites is Rachel York's "Let's Do It, Let's Fall In Love"
Years ago I heard a young New York jazz vocalist named Roberta Baum sing a version of Send in the Clowns that was marvelous. I wonder what ever happened to her.

Jane Monheit has some lovely covers of showtunes...I love her "Why Can't You Behave?" among others. Definitely check her out if you have the chance! I believe she's playing often in the NYC area in the next few months.

I really like Ella Fitzgerald's "My Own Best Friend"...and while not technically a showtune, the jazz album "The Oz Sessions" is really nice too.
Miles Davis' PORGY AND BESS.
I love Diane Schuur with the Count Basie Orchestra singing "I Loves You, orgy"
