Ready for the new York City tour of Annie?
Annie was given the boot out of the Alvin/Simon by Merrily We Roll Along 16 performances and a heap of previews). Annie had no where to go although they wanted the Uris/Gershwin which was occupied and wouldn't become available for a few months.
Annie tranferred across the street to the slightly smaller ANTA/Virginia for about 6 weeks on and only an interim basis. Another show (Oh, Brother-2 performances and good-bye) was booked into that house, so Annie had to pack up again and sat down for a few weeks (maybe 4-6) at the tiny O'Neill. Only then did the cavern now known as the Gershwin become available. I think it had been playing a limited run of Rex Harrison in a tour of My Fair Lady.
Finally Annie settled in for about a year or so and played out its run to groups and discounts and God knows who else.
{Three of the four theatres named changed their names in the early 80s. Coincidence.)
This could be the last show to date to have played in four different houses.
Although The Subject Was Roses in the 1960s played five, but that's another story.
[It is the Friday before Labor Day. Anyone who has to go to the office today is not really working.]
well, for the record, chicago started at the richard rodgers (not the st. james), moved to the shubert, and is now at the ambassador...they move because they either can't afford to stay there so they move to a less expensive theatre, or the theatre has another show offering the theatre more money...money makes the world go 'round!

To add to the 42nd Street story. I also remember that they changed the show start time to 8:15 so if they could not get seats to other shows they still have time to get to 42nd Street.
I thought that was very clever.

Not to mention Merrick's great ad campaign with the 8:15 PM curtain time: "Broadway's Latest Hit!"
