I am looking to come down this December or June when would be the best time to come. Would I miss out on something by not going in Summer conversely would I miss out on something by not going in Winter. I know musicals won't go by then but plays do and casts of plays change faster than musicals. I am hoping to see If/Then , Kinky Boots, Gentleman's Guide. Rocky if it gets good reviews(which I believe happens tomorrow) Book Of Mormon, Once and Act One and The Realistic Jones Thank You

I am thinking of going for 8 days-10 days, having said that if a show is not good I will get rid of it. I have been to New York and I did not love Superior Doughnuts and Phantom of The Opera.

Where are you from? Your list is a good one. I think you'll enjoy most, if not all, of your selections. Rocky is fun. Include it in your selection. Know that some of your choices - Book of Mormon and perhaps Kinky Boots - will require advance purchase if you want a guaranteed seat.
Both June and December are tourist months, so New York can be crowded and the theaters busy. December, before Christmas is very cold, but very busy with everyone in town shopping and checking out all of the holiday festivities - windows, etc.

Posted: 3/12/14 at 11:37pmMost of your list will hopefully still be running in December. None of your listed shows has announced closing, but you can check out the box office figures and you'll see which shows aren't filling their seats. There is always a risk that something will close, but I'm pretty sure that at least, Book of Mormon, Kinky Boots, Once and Rocky will still be playing. If/Then is probably going to have a run, but as it hasn't opened yet, I'm not sure it will find its audience. Gentleman's Guide, although a lot of fun, is a crap shoot. It seems to hang on, but just barely. I'm not sure about your other choices as they also haven't opened.

Posted: 3/13/14 at 9:26amPersonally, I like to travel in June because the days are so long. You can go out to dinner and it will still be light out as you stroll to whatever Broadway show you're seeing. I love that! In December, it will be dark at 4 p.m. Not to mention cold.

I would come in June. It's Tony time and all the leads should still be here. As mentioned earlier, it stays light out longer. Also, unless you really like Idina*** or they make some major changes to If/Then, I would dump it. It's about as exciting as watching paint dry.
***Yes, we all know Idina can sing. She sings the show well. It is the show itself that is long and boring. IMHO.

Just throwing it out there, December is INSANE in NY.
It's not too early to book your accommodations. Hotels usually run close 100% occupancy in December.

We avoid the Theater District like the plague Christmas week, until after New Years. Too many people.

Simon Damon, Rocky is wonderful and very exciting theater. I wouldn't avoid it because of some of the New York critics. It is not the kind of production that often gets rave reviews and as it arrived with so much hype it was almost destined to be knocked down.

There will be a few shows pinning their future on a Tony win that may end up closing in June, so if there is a show that seems to be limping along (just look at the Grosses to sort out which shows need to see an uptick to continue much longer) you won't be seeing it in December. If you plan to come AFTER mid-December, all of the prices tend to rise for Broadway with all the extra tourists in town for Christmas, so I'd only consider December if you want to be here in the first half of the month.
Any shows opening in the fall that you really want to see? Or a show open now that won't be then?

When is the best time to go?
My best time has always been in the morning after a cup of black coffee and a cigarette. The combination of caffeine and nicotine is the best laxative I can think of.

I would definitely consider adding Violet to your list (if you decide to come in June).

The Realistic Joneses is scheduled to close on July 6th and Hedwig is scheduled to close on August 17th. It's possible those shows will extend their runs, but given that the stars of each show likely have other commitments, I doubt they will still be there in December.
