"And with all that Bovell has shoved into this play, I think it's lazy of an audience to want the beginning spoonfed. You've got to be an active audience member and think. Is that so wrong?"
Oh, NOW I see, If a play is muddled and confusing, it's the AUDIENCE's fault because it is too lazy to try and make heads or tails of it. (Of course, what does it matter whether it's even worth the effort to even make heads of tails of it?) I guess that also means that if an author is too inept or lazy himself to write a coherent piece of work, that makes him a genius.
Gee, all those stupid, lazy audiences who through the years have appreciated perfectly-clear works by Shakespeare, or Congreve, or Moliere, or O'Neill, or Williams. But of course, as we all know, you're not required to think at their plays. Nor do they give you anything of value to think about. They're just a bunch of pandering authors who "spoonfeed" their audiences. If only they all could have been as deep and as challenging as the author of "When the Rain Stops Falling," and if only all audiences could be as insightful as those who like this mindblowing, stunning, brilliantly-written play. What a wonderful world it would be.

I saw the play last week and enjoyed it thoroughly. I didn't find it muddled/confusing or oeverdone/obvious. It seemed to hit all the right notes. I was engaged from start to finish. I was confident that all would be revealed by play's end, and it was. I got it. The narrative points were made, I thought, with great intelligence and clarity without ever spilling over into tasteless obviousness.
I've generally lost my patience for the kind of narrative games this play plays, but this play worked for me in ways that things like LAST YEAR AT MARIENBAD and the unspeakable MULHOLLAND DR. didn't, largely in that I gave a damn about the characters onstage.
I'd have posted sooner on this play, but couldn't find a thread devoted to it. Searches for keywords like "rain" and "falling" yielded nothing, and then I searched for "cromer" and got this thread. They really need to get a new search engine for this site.
