Tickets for this at LCT, reported to be "sold out," are once again available.
Just a heads up for those interested in seeing this shockingly beautiful play.

Posted: 2/17/10 at 12:29amI've got one for Saturday evening. Can I ask how long it ran? In reading it, it struck me as a 2:30+ evening.

Per the show site, its 1 hour and 50 minutes, no intermission.
The show site also says the following about rush: StudenTix is closed but Student Rush tickets may be available. Each day, LCT offers $20 student rush tickets beginning two hours before a production at the Lincoln Center Theater Box Office (subject to availability). Student rush tickets are limited to one ticket per performance and you must show a valid college/university ID to purchase a ticket.
Is that applicable to both SOUTH PACIFIC and WTRSF? And is WTRSF really selling that well that I'm going to have trouble getting a rush seat on, say, a Thursday?
I wanna see this so bad. Maybe I should just cave and go for full price. Any idea of how the rush is? Or if there even is one? Thanks!

I was there last night and really didn't enjoy it. If the quality of a play were based on how many parallels, symbols, repeated text/staging, and character foils were squeezed in, this would be the best play ever written. But for me, it was just too much. I felt like I was being hit over the head with a symbolic frying pan repeatedly during the entire show. There are several "twists", but not a single one that anyone with half a brain shouldn't see see coming a mile away. Some of the tech elements were cool, but at times it went a little overboard. This play has the potential to be good, but it needs to be toned down.
For the record, it's an hour and 55 minutes with no intermission.

"Shockingly beautiful?" "Best play of the season?"
Slow, confusing, muddled, and ugly as all get out. What a horrible evening in the theatre.
Why does Lincoln Center put on such a thing?

I got to LCT on Wednesday to see if they had either student rush for either South Pacific or When The Rain Stops Falling for the afternoon performance. They didn't have any for South Pacific. However, they did have one for When The Rain Stops Falling. Unfortunately, I did get one and then due to a family emergency was unable to use it. So, there was a guy asking if anyone had a ticket for it that they were willing to sell. So I gave it to him and got my 20 bucks back. Bit of a pity really due to the fact that this was something that I wanted to see.
I guess in the end it was better off that I didn't go see it. I was very tired and not sure that I would have been able to give it the attention it deserved and would have walked out upset at that fact and not have been able to give it a fair assessment of it being good or bad.

With all its considerable resources, Lincoln Center has to go trawling in Australia to bring this wretched thing here?
Maybe they should just stick to revivals.

I felt you had to work thru the first half of the play for the payoffs that came in the second half. Not that here weren't moments during that first half when I thought I WAS really going to hate the play. If you ask me if I found it moving , rewarding and was glad I went , yes I did. But I would NEVER send anyone else to it. I didn't have to read this board or ATC , just see the show and listen to the audience afterwards to know that some people are really going to hate this show. Some will see it as a long , murky slog. But , there will be a few ( like myself and the friend I brought to it )who will be glad they came. BUT I can think of no way of telling one group from another ...so I can't recommend it? Does that make sense????

I saw the show last night, and was able to snag a prime rush seat due to the storm.
I would definitely recommend seeing the show, although I was a little let down by it myself. To echo what others have said, the first 45 minutes to an hour are a little brutal to get through. I definitely understand that most of what is in that period is setup for the wonderful second half of the show, but the writing is just not as strong in the first half either while he is setting us up. However, the writing and the production really hits a wonderful stride and the last half of the show is a strongly compelling ride. I'm assuming that a week away from opening, they are frozen, but the show could have really done well with about 10 minutes of trimming from the first-half.
David Cromer has confirmed himself as one of the best directors working in New York today. He pulls 110% out of the material, which could have easily floundered very badly under a less apt hand. The performances are all grounded and extremely moving. Mary Beth Hurt was the standout for me, I certainly hope she gets some awards attention for this performance, as it one of my most memorable of the season so far. The only performance that underwhelmed me was Victoria Clark, as there were moments of hers that just felt very inauthentic to me.
All in all, it was an exciting theatrical evening, and I'm very glad I was able to stick with it throughout, as the payoffs were great.

Posted: 2/27/10 at 4:28pmI got there right at 6, when they start selling rush. They also had 50% off at the Lincoln Center Atrium, which would be $40.

Just returned from this afternoon's performance and I was completely blown away. I loved it so much. I can't believe it has gotten so little buzz/coverage on this board. Now that I know how everything turns out, I would like to see it again so that the beginning isn't as confusing.
Outstanding performances overall and a brilliantly written play. Definitely go see this if you can.

"Now that I know how everything turns out, I would like to see it again so that the beginning isn't as confusing."
If a play has to be seen twice to make sense of the beginning, I would say that play isn't particularly well written.
"Outstanding performances overall and a brilliantly written play."
How can a play that is in part confusing be deemed "brilliantly written?" Personally, I thought the whole thing was an abomination. The acting was quite good, though.

As with any mystery, a second viewing allows you to see more of the clues you missed the first time. I think it's the sign of a well-written show if you can see it again and still find more information and insight. Vertigo? The Sixth Sense? So much suddenly makes sense when you get to the big reveal. A second watch is immensely fulfilling...that doesn't make them poorly-written. I say the same goes for this play.
And I think it is a wonderful play.

Posted: 2/28/10 at 2:49amAnd with all that Bovell has shoved into this play, I think it's lazy of an audience to want the beginning spoonfed. You've got to be an active audience member and think. Is that so wrong?
#24When the Rain Stops Falling
Posted: 2/28/10 at 6:59amThe real question is how can you possibly have not seen what happens at the end? Isn't it painfully obvious from like 10 minutes in? Everything about this show is overdone. Over-written, over-directed, over-acted.
