When the tonys were in Broadway houses set question.

How did the sets work for performances if there was a show currently running at the theatre? Did they even have performances in the same theatre as the awards? I ask because the show boat 1994 tony performance did not look like it was on the sunset stage. Also would the show who was hosting the tonys go off line that week so they could rehearse the awards?

As best I remember, sometimes they were presented in a theatre with a show running (usually one of best musical nominees but at least once at the Majestic long after Phantom opened (year Rent won)) and sometimes in an unoccupied one.

This sometimes would allow one of the nominated musicals to perform on its full set--see this amazing example that preserved the full fashion parade from Coco:

Other shows would find a way to perform around the show that was in the theatre-- see this performance from Applause the same year with the title song recreated on the revolving set from Coco:

I think they would not have a performance on the day of the awards but the rest of the week went on as scheduled with Tony rehearsals and prep around the shows schedule.

Thought immediately of that stunning COCO set. It was obviously a pretty mediocre at best musical but Hepburn is amazing in that performance, croaking out those lyrics and no one can deny that that set and the fashion parade is pretty epic!

Would love to hear more about this, it's something I've wondered about too.

The COCO set always impressed me as being sparse but those bare walls were needed for projections used to evoke certain.men in Coco's life. Imagine how effective modern technology would be in those scenes today!

Come to think of it, a revival of COCO with someone who could both act and sing (LuPone?) and modern technoloy (holograms), might be a real treat! The score is really good under it all.
