If any film is screaming to be adapted into a musical (Marc Shaiman?!) is the 1966 gem THE TROUBLE WITH ANGELS, which starred Rosalind Russell (as Mother Superior) along with Hayley Mill and June Harding. Gypsy Rose Lee played a modern ballet instructor.
Here's a quick synopsis:
Two juvenile pranksters act up at the St. Francis Academy for Girls. It is up to the patient and understanding Mother Superior to show them the right path.
St. Francis Academy for Girls used to be a quiet sedate convent school - quiet and sedate, that is, until it was invaded by its newest pupil, Mary Clancy. Mary is a hellion who's youthful spirits keep Mother Superior in a constant state of panic as she and her friend, Rachel Devery, substitute bubble bath for the nun's sugar, smoke cigars in the boiler room, and attempt to make a life-mask of the face of a fellow student with quick-hardening plaster. Through it all, Mother Superior is determined to salvage something of worth from the youthful clay.

Haha, thank you Brody!
I've always thought this would be a great idea- a couple things might be a little hard to translate to the stage, but its definitely do-able. And almost the whole thing takes place within the school so thats pretty simple. Yeah, I'd love to see a musical of it.
Ah, I love that movie.
WOMAN ON TRAIN: "A child your age smoking!"
MARY: "No madam, I am not a child- I am a midget with bad habits."

I wish they would release the widescreen version on DVD. There is only a pan and scan version out there

jimnysf -- TCM shows it widescreen, alas not 'anamorphic', but widescreen no less. I put it on DVD, so at least I have a widescreen print on DVD.
TCM is airing the widescreen version again on Tuesday August 21, 2007 at 12:30am EST (Monday night/Tuesday morning).

You voted America...now come and see the show!
You watched them every week on TV on the series Grease: You're The One that I want, now watch them live!
Max Crumm and Laura Osens are now starring as Danny and Sandy on Broadway in Grease!
Everybody that I have talked to LOVES it! One friend told me it was the best thing he has ever seen on Broadway.
I highly recommend this show to everybody as it is the Best Revival of any show in YEARS!
If you see one show in New York- see Grease.
It is the best show on Broadway in years!

Now that's a GREAT idea! Rosiland Russell's habit would be hard to fill, however. This is a little gem of a film that has plenty of moments that would lend themselves to song.
I agree Marc Shaiman would be the right person for the project. Marc - please put this on your things-to-do list after Catch Me If You Can.
But who would play Marvel-Ann?
