Where is this bit of Hamilton news?

I wonder what will happen tbh. TBH I agree I don't see the big deal if there are one or 2 actors cast in main roles but the whole point of the thing is to have a minority cast I think... but obviously white people are considered. There are white people in the ensemble and I believe one or 2 of the main roles have white understudies. But I mean if they want to cast non-whites I don't see the big deal...

before we start running away with this thread, we need to refocus the conversation because we are conflating two issues: considering (or "seeing"Where is this bit of Hamilton news? white actors vs. actually casting them.  we should all know that white actors will probably not be cast in any of the lead or featured roles... that's a given based on Lin's public comments and it is an artistic decision, so that is perfectly legal and acceptable. that is NOT what this article is touching on. it's touching on the apparent violation of employment labor laws and union guidelines/policies, which happened when a casting notice was posted suggesting that ONLY non-white actors could audition. that is illegal and discriminatory... you cannot limit a pool of applicants or candidates based solely on their ethnicity or the color of their skin.

HAMILTON producers tried to get away with shrinking that pool down by limiting the talent to non-white applicants/candidates... and that is illegal. that's really all this comes down to.

kk they should just change the wording so people will stop complaining. People only care because it's so popular. If it was dream girls or color purple or something nobody would care....

not trying to be rude but did you read either of the articles posted in this thread? they stated the notice was taken down shortly after it went live... but i guess there are conflicting reports as to WHO was initially at fault (producers claim it was Backstage but then backtrack and proceed to blame Equity!) and if it still exists in certain areas of the world wide web.

yes, they removed the wording from the official notice but only after being criticized for it. that probably does warrant an investigation by the City's labor department... this story isn't over yet.

sorry theres this CBS article going around about a recent casting call http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2016/03/29/hamilton-casting-call-non-white/ the equity people are saying it's bad. Like go ahead they should change the wording but it's dumb because you know white people only care because it's extremely popular.

That's all been discussed. You're having a conversation with yourself.

It seemed JM226 was referencing the NY daily article though from a month ago though. I was just showing the article I was referencing which was made yesterday. Maybe I'm mistaken or confused.

"you cannot limit a pool of applicants or candidates based solely on their ethnicity or the color of their skin."

Right. Which I would argue that Bright Star did as well, with their notice that I posted. Either way, Hamilton should've had a lawyer and/or the union read their notice before it went out. It's obviously a gray area here.

this is not complicated. the first one was sloppy-not the end of the world, nothing to investigate, fixed, no harm no foul. there is literally no story here but haters gonna hate no matter what.

Where does it say that white people will not be allowed to audition? Oh right, it doesn't. It simply says that they are "seeking" non-white actors. That doesn't mean you can't audition if you are white. Who knows? Maybe a white person will blow them away and they'll have no choice but to cast them in one of the lead roles. Probably not, but it could happen. This is such a non-issue. Moving on.

Kad: You can cast any which way in terms of race, but you cannot specify that a certain group of people cannot apply/will not be considered.

In effect, it seems like the production may in fact decline to consider people of certain races, but it may not specify that in a casting notice. Doesn't this just seem like a waste of everyone's time? :)

kdogg, lots of things are pretty much a waste of time, including most open calls, but the issue is opportunity, not likelihood of success. The number of actors who are passed over but who strike a chord and get called in on something else is mountainous. When you restrict auditions, you eliminate that opportunity, as well as the less likely possibility of selling your performance so astonishingly that you get cast despite the odds. The theatre is a strange business, filled with uncertainty and rejection and serendipity.

Once again, WHERE does it say they are restricting the audition to only "Non-White" people? It doesn't. They're not restricting the audition to anyone. They're just letting you know what they're looking for. Please stop repeating the whole "White people can't audition" thing as if it is fact. It's not.

"And besides there are white performers in the ensemble and King George."

Three.  Only three white people are in Hamilton.  I'm glad people are calling this completely discriminatory casting call out.  It's a complete violation and illegal.

Which is no different than how nonwhite performers (if they get to be included) are treated as tokens in plenty of current and past productions on Broadway.

I'm clearly talking about this racist casting notice.  It's illegal and they have to change it due to it being discriminatory.

I suppose you're including Hamilton on this, right? I don't see, say, Les Mis doing all this fuzz about people of color being cast. Hamilton, however, seems to be all the time with "HEY, WE ONLY CAST NON-WHITE PEOPLE, TAKE A LOOK, PLEASE, WE'RE DESPERATE".

The color of people shouldn't be a matter. At all.

Again, Im obviously talking about the casting call information.  “The language on the ‘Hamilton’ audition call, located on the show’s website, is inconsistent with Equity’s policy,” spokeswoman Maria Somma.
