I was just wondering what makes you say that? Have you attended a rehearsal or know someone in the company? Because as far as I can tell the show doesn't start previews till this Friday. I am just wondering thats all.

Oh Christ...Princess, OF COURSE fans would protest if Rent closed! And it's not just Rent. There ARE people out there who don't like the show out there. And why does it matter if you wouldn't care if Gypsy or Urinetown closes? Fans of those shows will be upset too. Yes, OTHER PEOPLE. The world does not revolve around your wants! Personally, I do think it's time that Gypsy closed. Also Aida, which I think sort of lost its spark when Adam left. And Toni... Does anyone think Mama Mia should go?

Perhaps it was. I tend to get 'stressed' when people state something should happen because THEY want it to happen. And I've never seen Mama Mia, so I can't really judge it. I just don't like Abba :-p

Many moons ago I brought my brother and sister-in-law to Forbidden Broadway. They knew nothing, zip, about what was going on in the theater world, or much Broadway history. And they laughed their butts off! And even at inside jokes that I figured nobody would get, but then I realized the jokes were just funny. (Actually, they did recognize that the guy in the cat suit was making fun of cats: "Remember? When an actor played human?") Who knew? Not me, that's who.

I'm with Corine. Everone who likes theatre should see Forbidden Broadway. They always seem to have a sprinkling of well known performers (Streisand, Andrews, Minelli etc) represented to make up up for the other actors that some audience members don't recognise in their barbs.

With respect to Phantom...I don't think it will close any time soon, as well as the tourist factor already spoken of, the movie is suppose to come out late 2004 and I imagine TPTB would like to keep it open for that after all Chicago on stage had a boost in audience numbers with their movie. Also I have a feeling ALW will want Phantom to run longer then Cats and certainly longer then Les Mis which it's still heading towards.

I think it's fairly safe to say that, unless a show is losing money by the barrowful, everyone is going to hang on until the January bloodbath. This January is going to be littered w/ closed shows, but that only means that Bway is so hot now (not to sound too Pollyanna-ish.)

After reading this entire thread I am amazed that no one has mentioned the obvious point. IF NOTHING CLOSES, NOTHING NEW CAN OPEN!!!

If DOTV or URBAN COWBOY had succeeded, would we have any room for TABBOO, WICKED, or BOY FROM OZ?

If CABARET never closes, we will probably never get the Broadway production of ASSASSINS.

No one wants people to lose their jobs, but I say “out with the old, in with the new!”

Not every one will be happy, but maybe if PHANTOM or RENT finally close, fans of those shows will find something new and even better than the shows they favor now.

Open minds… open doors… Open New Shows!

Regardless of what closes, what is interesting to me is that with all the new shows that have opened in the last few months that the most popular gross wise will be The Producers once Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick return.

I have taken many tourists to see FB and they loved it.
The brilliance of Gerard and his talented cast makes it worth the trip.

ok I have to make another comment on here. StateofJade, I posted MY opinion on what I personally would LIKE to close because thats what this thread is about, is it not? I wasn't the only one posting my opinion, so why did you decide to zero in on my comments? I'm aware that Broadway dosnt revolve around MY wants but I just made my opinion known that I would NOT care if Gypsy or Urinetowen closed, just like other people said they think RENT should even though I dissagreed.

SueleenGay, you have a good point. But just because new shows come up doesn't mean we want our favorties to go away! Theres room for the old and the new. I love plenty of other shows other than RENT, but it just happens to be my very favortie. RENT didn't have to go anywhere just because Wicked or Taboo opens. There's room for everyone =)

Princess, that is my point. There is NOT room for everyone on B'way. As long as a show is making money it will run. That is the "Biz" part.

But on artistic side, if theatre is to remain a living breathing thing we have to pull the plugs on some others. Just like "The Circle of Life."

Some must die, so that others can be born.

Not to be argumentative, but some show that was not Rent DID have to close in order to make room for Taboo or Wicked. There are a finite number of theaters, and therefore there is NOT room for everything.

There is nothing wrong with wishing for your favorite show to be available indefinitely, but in the long run, I'd prefer to see a show I love go out in a blaze of respectability rather than watch it wither into a caricature of itself.

I just saw PHANTOM yesterday again and I really hope it does not close for awile! It is just such a great show with such powerful voices! I also want RENT to keep going but it looks doubtful...

After this weeks grosses, if I didn't know Nahtan Lane and Matthew Broderick were going to be returning I'd say The Producers. At the percentage it's at now I doubt it would make it out of the dreadful (Jan.-Apr.) attendance months. It's been said many times but it always shocks me at how that show stumbled.
