Which Broadway Musical is the next to close?

It's between Gypsy and Urinetown, I think. Those are constantly on the TKTS line (I pass it every day on the way home from school), and they aren't ever selling out. Other shows like 42nd Street and Millie are on there, but those tickets sell, and 42nd Street is always on Broadway.com's list of bestsellers. One thing is for sure- if Gypsy doesn't close anytime soon, it will as soon as Bernadette leaves unless they get someone with real star quality, like our beloved Melanie.

I hope they both run for a long time. Actually I heard that the new star in Urinetown is wonderful. I hope it runs as long as CATS.
Oh and thanks for the tip on Gypsy I want to see it.

Urinetown better not close! I've been telling all the tourists at the Visitor Center to go see it... (ah... and I just accidentally told someone the Henry Miller is between 8th and Broadway...ack... oops... 6th, 8th... who's counting?! They'll find it, dammit...how many theatres really look like an outhouse anyhoo???)

Honestly, I think Rent should close. I'm so sick of everyone asking me where the Nederlander is or where Rent is playing. *sigh* When will the tourists learn??? Coincidentally, once again, just as I typed that someone asked me if we have Rent t-shirts. LMAO. AHHHHH! *pulls hair*

I agree- Rent, as much as I love the show is quite possibly the next to close. It's not like I'm rooting for it to go, but its not doing so well, and when I went to see it, the cast was a little blah.

Rent will make it to the 10th aniversery, next to close probably Gypsy or Millie, I don't see Urinetown closing anytime soon, they are in a perfect theater, till its torn down, and they have a realitively small nut. Urinetown should run for a while.

My vote for next to close: Millie. In January, I don't think stunt casting for Millie could save the show. Maybe if they are lucky keep it open till summer.

just because people wanna know where the show is playing, you want it to close? Jeez, this is a tough crowd.
Why should it close on Broadway but still have tours?
RENT is slowly recovering from the brutal month it had, and I agree it'll make it to the 10th anniversary =D it better NOT go anywehre anytime soon! Too many fans would protest =)
I won't shed any tears if Gypsy or Urintown closes.

Time for Rent to go. I saw it again this past summer and it was so tired. Kind of sad. Gypsy will run at least thru Bernadettes contract. And then I wouldn't be surprised if they come up with some stunt casting. Urinetown is in the perfect theater and may run a very long time.

I hear Bernadette is extending her contract, perhaps to the fall or the end of 2004, so Gypsy won't be going anywhere. Urinetown is well produced to run at a very low breakeven, and has seldom had an unprofitable week, so I could see it making it to its third anniversary in fall, 2004.

There are some other long-runners that have high breakeven costs that may be in more danger this winter, given the drop-off in tourism.

GYPSY won't close before Peters' contract runs out. It has that balcony which is very hard to sell plus some orchestra seats that don't have a great view that it puts at the booth.

I think RENT has a few things up its sleeve still like that contest another "name" coming in soon.

MILLIE will certainly hang on until 2004. I would be very surprised if they closed before the end of Burke's contract. And if they do get Florence Henderson to replace her, I think she'll give the box office a nice jump.

Interesting Princess....I think that maybe that SHOULD go. It is a well loved show, but it has been running for 16 years, and it isn't nearly as good as when it opened, I don't think. I agree. And I would never want Millie to close. It's too good of a show. One of the best musicals out there right now, in my opinion.

Now is about the time when theaters are hoping they can make it to December and the mad tourist rush. Their December sales could decide whether they close or run longer.

Personally I think the next show to go is Little Shop of Horrors. They have never run at full capacity. Right now they are averaging about 65-70% capacity.
If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

Well; I do think Millie is a atrocious show ( and I know I am in the minority on that- so thats cool). A visit to Rent these days reminds me of when Chorus Line was in its last year ( before the hoopla of the countdown till closing). Very small houses and a creepy sad feeling in the theater. Plus whatever there was of a audience did not speak English. :) It is sad when these shows go from a "must see status" to a "survival status."

All of the times I have seen Rent even on a Friday night the theatre has been half empty (and it's a small theatre) so I have to agree on that one. Phantom will stay open because a while it's a good show and it's one of those tourist shows like Lion King that the people in Japan know about :P Urinetown seems to have lost popularity and publicity.

I wish they all could stay...well almost all! I did hear on good authority, that show rights for Beauty and the Beast will be available summer of 2004. I've not heard any talk of closing the Broadway production. But..we will see!

Of course that's not why I think Rent should close. I despise Rent, as anyone who knows me understands. It's quite irritating that all these tourists only care about that ONE particular show -- if it would just close already they'd be forced to see some of the new fabulous theatre out there. Broaden your horizon people! That's all I have to say to these tourists who are closed off to musicals which don't have as big of a hype. It's all about Rent, Hairspray, Phantom of the Opera, Beauty and the Beast, or Chicago (and only since the movie, of course). I get so excited when someone walks in and asks about something else. You know someone actually asked me about Menopause, the Musical today?! I almost died! HOW many tourists even know that existed? 'Magine that! It made my day!

Oh no reason to malign the tourists. They spend alot of money to come to NY and want to spend their money on a sure thing. It is easier to be adventuresome when you are a local or more of a theater fan as opposed to being from out of town and taking in a show as part of the New York Experience. I have friends from Europe visitng NYC in a few weeks ;and as part of their trip they want to see a broadway show. I am sure they will opt for Chicago or something in that scale as opposed to "Menopause the musical"
