I'm deciding on which recording I should buy...
1992 Canadian Cast with Donny Osmond and Janet Metz
Original Broadway Cast with Bill Hutton and Laurie Beechman
1993 Los Angeles Cast with Michael Damian and Kelli Rabke
1991 London Revival Cast with Jason Donovan and Linzi Hateley
or the New National Tour Cast with Patrick Cassidy and Amy Adams?
This one is my fav:

My family loves the Canadian cast with Donny Osmond. We will be seeing Patrick Cassidy next month. We saw it previously with Sam Harris.
I think Jason Donovan is the best. And so is Linzi Hateley.

No offense to anyone who enjoyed Donny Osmond...but the Canadian Cast is a travesty. I can't stand it compared to the original cast. The cast, orchestra, and even the arrangments are inferior. I haven't heard the second recording you mentioned but to own both the OCR and the Canadian Cast and OCR is better in every way.
I'm so happy that someone else has heard of the Jason Donovan one. My family has it on cassette (my dad's old boss taped it for us) and I've been trying to get it on CD. I thought it was Donny Osmond growing up, until I actually heard the Canadian Recording. I like the Jason Donovan one more than the Canadian Recording. The Canadian one has some things added in that make me cringe.
I have all the ones you listed. The Jason Donovan/Linzi Hateley is easily my favorite. Jason Donovan has a great voice and is a really sweet Joseph. The cast overall is much better than the others. The Canadian one is good, but the cast is uneven. I also really dislike Michael Damien on the LA cast recording.
P.S. I had no idea Donovan was a soap opera star/soon to be washed-up has-been when I first heard it.
Personally, I love the OBC. I've seen several productions of it but my least favorite was with Donny Osmond.
my favorite is the Joseph SOUNDTRACK with Donny Osmond and Maria Friedman. It's the most complete as it has all of the "One More Angel" dance music and the apache dance music. I've only ever seen it sold on the really useful website though...
Jason Donovan was a big pop star in Australia, Europe and Asia. His hit "Too many broken hearts in the world" was # 1 in the UK. He also had other big hits "Specially for you" (duet with Kylie Minogue). Donovan was one of the singers that worked with producers Stock Aitken Waterman, that also worked with artists like Kylie, LaToya Jackson, Rick Astley, Donna Summer, Samantha Fox and others.
Michael Damien is just NASTY! But the Narrator on this version, I find, is by far the best vocalist.
Overall, however, I prefer the Canadian cast. I really like Donny's performance and the ensemble harmonies are great.
I didn't know they actually recorded a cd with Maria. She is the best! well Linzi is as good as she is. They just have a different voice and they can't be compared. I feel weird buying a cd in pounds. So i think i won't buy it.
Doesn't Maria kinda lose it on the top notes?
definitely linzi and jason. loving linzi's voice, she's awesome. kinda shouts the top notes but gives it so much life and energy. am putting on joseph on tuesday with a cast of 50 8 and 9 year olds. wish me luck!!!!
Good luck mate.
And I love your name. Cracked me up.
I'm partial to the one with Jason Donovan and LInzi Hatley. I saw the revival in London in 1996, but I saw Philip Schofield instead of Jason Donovan, who had left by then.
Love the dvd with Donny Osmond and Maria Friedman. That was my first introduction to Maria, and I've been a fan ever since.
OBC
I have michael Damian and Kelli Rabke. It is the only one that i have heard but it has Marc Kudischad reuben!
OBC..
Laurie Beechman's vocals are hard to match...
If I must pick among the new recordings...I'd go Donovan/Hatley
I adored Laurie Beechman on the OBC but the rest is jsut okay. The three recordings that were done of the London, Canadian, and LA casts are all pretty mediocre. There is engineering issues and something happened where ever song is played a semitone higher than it actually is - hence why Chris Colicos sounds like chipmunk on the London album. Yes, Michael Damien is nasty. Awful! I like the Canadian album best because Donny Osmond has the best voice but some others are kind of grating on my nerves -Janet Metz for instance. Again, on all three albums, the qualitya nd the orchestrations are very maufactured (the orchestra playing is a studio one so they basically recorded it like a karaoke track - cheaper, I guess). I thought Soundtrack for the film version was beautifully engineered. Full orchetsra with strings and terrific brass and I get chills during the opening chords of "Jacob and Sons".
My recommendation: buy the soundtrack with Maria Friedman and Donny Osmon.
1991 London revival - Donovan/Hatley. I've loved Maria Freidman in everything I've seen her in, but in the role of the narrator, Linzi Hatley wipes the floor with her. Some of the original recordings from the 60s and 70s are fun (the first original cast album with Gary Bond for instance), but they don't have the same energy....

Is there any place other than the Really Useful website to get the version with Maria Friedman?
someone tell me how the new one is with Patrick and Amy... did they use the same recorded tracks as the LA, London and Cannadian recordings or did they record new orchestrations?

This is hard - because each cast recording has it's strengths! I love the Michael Damian Broadway cast as a whole the most out of any of the recordings (mostly because of Kellie Rabke), but Donny Osmond's vocals are better than Michael's. Jason Donovan is outstanding, but I'm not a fan of the rest of that cast at all.
So, I recommend the Michael Damian one - because as a whole the cast is my favorite vocally - even if there are better Josephs - Michael is fine.
