I cannot answer this question myself as we did not see Lestat for a few weeks. Another reason is we liked Dracula & DOTV but for everyone else who saw all 3 it is a valid question
Mull & discuss

Posted: 4/23/06 at 11:13amI also liked Dracula, maybe it was because of Tom Hewitt, and Dance of the Vampires. I am not seeing Lestat until July. I will probably like that too. I like that whole horror gothic thing. My only complaint about DOTV was they made it comedic in parts where it should have been serious.

I am puzzled as to why you would start a negative thread about three shows, two of which you liked, and one you haven't seen.
But since you did, I enjoyed the two shows you did, though they were hugely flawed. Haven't seen Lestat, and probably won't, unless an good opportunity comes up.
BTW:"...I cannot answer this question myself as we did not see Lestat for a few weeks..." when it seems that you still haven't seen it? For the first time in my life, I will type "YOMANK".

I started it as so many people hated all 3 shows ( while some loved them ) so I thought it a good topic for a conversation to see what others think
The first 2 were enjoyable - not great. I daresay we will probably feel the same about Lestat. My wife used to love Anne Rice but has soured on here recently. She has read all the vampire books while I read one or two

I have seen all 3 productions, but not all in New York. DOTV (Broadway) was the worst. I couldn't believe that the actors were able to keep a straight face, and some did not look happy to be there. A lot of the audience laughter I heard that evening were followed with, Is this for real? It's made me think twice about seeing productions that have been Americanized.
Dracula, I saw in La Jolla, and if the powers that be had kept it somewhat from what I had seen, it could have been a nice chamber musical. From the changes I heard that had been done in New York, it was much worse. But then I thought this show should have went into a smaller theatre, off-broadway. Or continued to be done in smaller regional houses.
Lestat I saw in San Francisco, and though it has been changed drastically since it last performed here, I can only hope for the best until Tuesday night, when the show has finally stopped changing. I'm hoping to get the chance to see it again in a few months.

Posted: 4/23/06 at 4:26pmDOTV was the worst by far. It didn't seem to know what it wanted to be - camp, drama, spectacle? Lestat is definitely trying to be drama. Updated On: 4/23/06 at 04:26 PM

I liked DANCE OF THE VAMPIRES a lot.
However, DRACULA looks like a masterpiece compared to LESTAT.

DOTV freaking rocked. That's all I have to say.
But then again, I saw it the one night that Michael Crawford did NOT go on and I got to see the amazing Rob Evan...which made it even better!
.
It really was just a great show...it was so funny, and I loved the music. It was just a lot of fun to see.

Dracula was BY FAR the worst of them all...it was incredibly boring, too many effects, and had the word "pecadillo" in it lol.
I actually loved DOTV and think if it came out after dracula it would have done great because it kinda makes fun of that concept!
I recently saw lestat and thought it was wonderful! i'll try to post a review shortly!

The original Viennese production of Dance Of The Vampires makes Les Miserables look like Lestat

DOTV is the best of the vampire musicals.
Dracula comes in a close second.
Lestat is laughably bad (but not so bad that you can have fun).

It consistently amazes me that people think Dance of the Vampires is so bad. They must not get out to the theater very much. To me, the most inexcusable thing for a Broadway musical to be is boring. DOTV was silly, unfocused and uneven, but NEVER EVER boring. I liked a good deal of the music and it was intentionally campy and off-the-wall. Also, the cast had terrific voices and threw themselves into it. I ended up seeing it twice (once intentionally, the second time filling in for someone who could not make it into town) and both times the show got very rousing standing ovations at the close. The truth is that even in its misfired moments, it entertained me more than did the entire productions of The Lion King or Aida.
By contrast, I thought Dracula started off fine, but then slowly (and laboriously) petered out. Act II, in particular, was becoming almost excruciatingly dull. I felt that Tom Hewitt was pretty underused in that production and shared no chemistry with Melissa Errico. I remember liking Kelli O'Hara as the secondary female lead, but I do not remember anyone else particularly blowing me away in that show. One thing that always puzzles me is why playwrights and screenwriters always insist on taking the Dracula story and trying to turn it into a tragic romance. Has anyone even read the Bram Stoker novel? Dracula was supposed to be a ugly and horrible creature feared by both the male and female characters. He was not even remotely romanticized by Stoker.
I will be seeing Lestat soon and can offer some insight into that, but sadly what I have been hearing from viewers is that it tends more towards the ponderous rather than the exciting or memorable. I just hope it isn't pure tedium.

Dance of the Vampires may have been the worst "vampire" musical. (I loved it).
But out of all three at least it was the most entertaining. I would sit through that again than sit through 30 performances of Lestat.
