Hello all,
Which recording of 42nd street should I own? Which recording is the best representation of the show?

I actually prefer the more complete 2001 Broadway revival recording.
The 2001 Broadway recording is truly remarkable.
My vote is for the revival recording too. Having seen both productions, I still grab the 2001 CD when I want to hear the score. Though it is nice hearing Orbach and Grimes on the original, I'd still opt for the most recent recording.
Another vote for the revival cast recording. I saw the original production a few months after it opened, but for some reason I enjoyed the revival more (which I saw several times).
Australian, if you can find it. It reflects the original version of the show, but is a better recording than the OBCR or the revival recording.
I'll give the lone vote for the OBC. It's not complete, but the sound is amazing and the cast is great.
Avoid the angst and get both.
