The Full Monty definitely!!
The Full Monty is easily a far superior show as whole than DRS. Monty has one of the best scores of the 90s, both lyrically and musically.
So far
DRS- 10
TFM- 6
I also think DRS is more fresh in people's minds.

DRS, even though I liked Full Monty too
The Full Monty is easily a far superior show as whole than DRS. Monty has one of the best scores of the 90s, both lyrically and musically.
The show premiered at the Globe and on Broadway in 2000 so I suppose some of the score could have been written in the late 90s, but I wouldn't say the score is of the 90s.
The Full Monty without a doubt. The difference is that The Full Monty is a score that actually contributes to filling out the characters. DRS has a flashier score, by far. And a great deal of the songs in DRS are wonderful. But pretty much all of the score of The Full Monty is wonderful. "Big Ass Rock" joins "Gotta Get a Gimmick" as one of the rare always-brings-down-the-house numbers in musical theatre. The show itself is pretty damn great (and is listed as the most recent of the 101 greatest Broadway musicals according to Ken Bloom and Frank Vlastnick). Superior to The Producers, by far.
"The Goods" is one of the greatest pop showtunes of this decade, in my opinion.
I'm not quite getting the book love for The Full Monty. Terrence McNally is a great writer on his own, but his contributions to book musicals are not my favorite -- especially Ragtime and The Full Monty. The Full Monty seems, in a lot of places, as though he just copied and pasted the movie dialogue and just changed some names. It's not so bad on stage when directed to hide certain flaws, but on paper it's especially episodic and still reads like a movie screenplay instead of a cohesive work for the stage.
Honestly, if it works, there's nothing wrong with copying and pasting. Most of My Fair Lady is Pygmalion. At least The Full Monty uses a great deal of original jokes, and includes a great deal of scenes that aren't in the movie. McNally and Yazbeck seized opportunities from the film that called for music, and created moments of their own to add more. You wanna talk about copying and pasting for the sake of pleasing fans, look at Young Frankenstein or Spamalot. In my opinion, The Full Monty is a prime example on how to successfully adapt a movie into a musical.
Add me to the DRS side. Everything about that show just sparkled - particularly the score. Add in the sets, costumes, book, cast, and it was pure joy. I still can't pass the Imperial without wishing I could see it one more time.
I love them both. I think David Yazbek is the funniest man on Broadway. That said, I think Dirty Rotten Scoundrels *just* pips The Full Monty to the post. Bear in mind I've seen neither show on stage so am literally just judging by the cast recordings, but then the subject does specify score, so I guess I'm in the clear.
The Full Monty has some freakin' BRILLIANT numbers. Ridiculously amazing. I love the arrangement for 'Scrap', 'Man' is just genius, and 'Big-Ass Rock' forever makes me laugh my ass off. However, there are songs in the score I skip when listening to the CD. I imagine they work better on-stage, but not so much for the listening. So while there are some absolute top-notch A+ numbers, there's also a few B- numbers for me.
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, on the other hand, consistently hovers around the A-/B+ mark. While I wouldn't say any one individual song comes out on top or that ANY of the songs are better than the really good ones from The Full Monty, the important fact here for me while making my judgement is that I never skip a single track. I listen to every last one and chuckle merrily throughout.
So even though The Full Monty is abso-freakin'-lutely BRILLIANT at its better moments, the overall consistency of the Dirty Rotten Scoundrels score means it *just* wins. Only just though.
And what's so wrong about sounding like the '80s? :P
While I believe Score & Lyrics Monty is better I prefer DRS and enjoy the show more. But I don't feel DRS can compare musically with songs like Breeze Off The River & You Walk With Me.
For me it's easily DRS. No offense, but "Big Ass Rock" isn't even close to being in the same league as "Gotta Get A Gimmick."
Definitely Full Monty for me too. Some great songs, great star turns, funny, and poignant. DRS to me was certainly a disappointment. Sure the cast was terrific, and there were some fall off your chair funny moments, but I was expecting more, which was the problem. I had heard some great word of mouth, and then left the theater underwhelmed.
When the cast recording for DRS came out, I still only listened to the same two or three songs, where I could listen to pretty much all of The Fully Monty.
I definitely think people love DRS so much because of the OBC. Come on, Lithgow, Norbert, Sherie, Gleason, Jbara, and Gettelfinger? It was an AMAZING cast. But based solely on material, it is weaker than Monty, in my opinion.
