Getting back to the original post in this thread - I have to defend Dr. Sex. I went to see it a couple months back, expecting what others in this thread are imagining. But, I was suprisingly entertained for 2 hours. The songs were fun and there were plenty of very funny scenes.
However, I can't imagine that this show belongs on Broadway. I think it would do very well off-Broadway. Just like Hedwig belonged off-Broadway, Debbie Does Dallas belonged off-Broadway, Bat Boy belonged off-Broadway and Little Shop belongs off-Broadway. I can enjoy these shows as much as I enjoy the standard big-budget Sondheim/Herman/Kander/Ebb non-threatening commercial fare.
It takes all kinds of shows to please everyone.
If you look at what's popular with the public these days, it'll explain it to you. Look at television, all those horrible reality shows. When people are flocking to watch others eat maggots and live spiders, why should it surprise you that a Jerry Springer musical and otherse like it is working?
As far as Mama Mia is concerned and others like that, I believe it's the comfort factor in the music, that it's all known and making people feeling nostalgic and happy away from the crap going on these days. I think that's part of Hairspray's appeal. It is an excellent show otherwise, but the sixties hook is what made a lot of people take a look see AND the fact they were familiar with the movie. Once again, comfort zone.
