When I first started reading this board I thought many of the posters seemed very knowledgeable and I enjoyed reading their thoughts and opinions. I have mixed thoughts now.

Knowing it is difficult for me to resist reading reviews on this board, and by critics on opening night, I've been going to shows early in the preview stage, that way I can go in unfettered.

My advice is read as little as possible about a show you really want to see.

I rarely like what people on here love so no it doesn't sway me one bit. I am capable of making my own decisions of what to see also and don't need people from this board telling me what to see or what to like.

Stage Door Sally, I thought the same thing about posters on here being knowledgeable but then I met some of them. Just because people see every show out there doesn't mean they know more about a show than someone who sees maybe 3 or 4 shows a year.

These are just my opinions.

Don't believe everything that you hear! Only the peeps involved know the truth!

I mostly see plays in London. This site skews heavily towards musicals on Broadway. It is very rare that I have the opportunity to have my opinions swayed. XD

Although while I wouldn't say I had my opinion swayed by you guys, I have had my expectations set to certain levels. I would have enjoyed August: Osage County whether I knew anything about it in advance or not, but I did go in with raised expectations thanks to all the enthusiastic reviews. (I'll be going into Hair on Friday with similarly raised expectations.) But having expectations in place doesn't affect my opinion as such; if I enjoy a show, I enjoy a show! And if I enjoy a show as much as I expected to, then there's no loss and everyone wins. But occasionally my expectation level ends up higher than my enjoyment level, and that's when a show is disappointing. I enjoy it the same amount I would have enjoyed it without prior knowledge, but if I was expecting to like it more, then I'm more likely to be disappointed.

Man, I hope that made sense to you guys. It makes perfect sense to me, but it got really convoluted in the telling. XD Basically, enjoyment =/= satisfaction, and while you won't be able to affect my enjoyment (and consequently opinion), you can occasionally prove a detriment to my satisfaction.

I disagree with you Yankeefan.

I can honestly say that there has never been a review by a poster on here that has either made me want to or not want to see a show.

I find the reviews posted by fellow members interesting in the sense that they represent where people are coming from in relation to the material being seen.

It's always cool to see how a particular work is affecting people emotionally (good or bad).

And there are a myriad of ways displayed. The die-hard fans that find a sense of connection, the regular theater goers who have good insight into how shows are holding up over time, the patrons who relate in a very personal way with certain material.

But as a legitimate critical opinion that influences my decision to see a show? Not so much.

....but the world goes 'round

I also disagree with yankeefan. I'm not swayed in the least by the opinions of others. Especially on this board. And I can't be the only one.

My opinions are almost always swayed by Reggie.

When I see the phrase "the ____ estate", I imagine a vast mansion in the country full of monocled men and high-collared women receiving letters about productions across the country and doing spit-takes at whatever they contain. -Kad
