I am mad that they are making a movie. Lots of cuts are probably going to be made. I don't think this movie will appeal to a general audience of people. Sondheim is difficult music to sing and learn. I don't think a lot of non-musical theater people can pull it off.

You'll be surprised! The adaptation is very interesting and scary.
I'm not angry. But I'm not as happy as I thought I would be. I'm not against it. Power to anyone who wants to try to steamline musicals into movies. Basically I have to see it before judgements are made (this coming from an avid fan of Sweeney and Burton).
But against? No.
I'm not against it, per se, but I'm just afraid it won't be done well. The only appeal it might have to the public is Johnny Depp, and maybe the whole people-get-killed-and-eaten thing (i.e. it'll be interesting to the scary movie crowd). No one will be pleased with whatever cuts they make.
Then again, Sondheim's not going to let them make a piece of crap, so I still have hope.
I'll be the first one in line at the movie theater anyway.
Although after a decade-long fanaticism for it I'm finally starting to get "Sweeney-ed out," I'm glad that a film version is being made so that the public at large (read: non-theater people) will be able to be introduced to Sondheim's genius.
That said, if they f*ck it up, than it will forever smear the name of the show...
Hmm...I wonder how one can be against something not even created yet...
why do some feel the need to bash every new movie musical that is announced.
I'm not against the movie, I'm against ****ty casting and Burton turning Sweeney Todd into "Tim Burton's Sweeney Todd".

Simple solution: don't go see it.
"I'm not against the movie, I'm against ****ty casting and Burton turning Sweeney Todd into "Tim Burton's Sweeney Todd"."
I'm not 100% against it I just know it's going to be like that^
I am by no means against it in any way, shape or form. Depp is an incredible actor, he was cast for a reason and I can not wait to see what it's like
There was an article about this in my paper today.
Again with the negative threads and posts *rolls eyes*
Would you rather have a hands-on Director or one with no vision?
I'd rather they just release the video with Lansbury and Hearn in theatres so that the 'non-theatre going public' can see it as it really is supposed to be done. Not some wacked out Tim Burton POS or some revival done by a hack.

That'll be a money maker for sure....can't you see the long lines at the box office to that?
well houflip4..Burton's last piece of crap didn't exactly have them lining up at the box office..and if Depp doesn't play Sweeney as Jack Sparrow..I doubt his fans will be lining up after the first weekend either. {From Hell was SUCH a hit, wasn't it?]
Although I personally am not a fan of Depp's irritating characterization in "Pirates," it is silly and unfair to assume he will play Sweeney the same way. He has made a few other movies before ya know.
my point was anything done to bastardize the original production is crap IMO.
If it were a direct transfer to film, it wouldn't work at all. Rent the video, if that's what you want. Tension works differently in film. I think everyone will be very surprised and satisfied...of course, not a frame has been shot!
The only thing I can tell you all is that the script is great and right now EVERY actress in England under 50 is clawing at this part. No names have been attached or approached yet. Soon.

Do you mean Ms. Lovett?
^Sorry, yup, Mrs. Lovett would be the part to get!

I have to disagree with the people saying that this movie won't appeal to the non-theatre goers. The thriller aspect will pull audiences in.
Please, all of you people moaning and complaining are the same that bitched and whined about the new version when the concept was announced. Then when it opened and it was good you all jumped on the bandwagon, as much as to say it was superior to the original production. Hell half of the people complaining about Depp and Burton had no clue about Sweeney until the new production opened. So before you bash it, wait to see it, and then you can "change your mind" and hop on the bandwagon.
Fosse wasn't faithful for the most part with the Cabaret movie and it's a work of genius.
Sondheim on screen, Sweeney on screen is a GOOD thing. I for one am excited to see where Burton takes it. We've seen Prince's Todd, We've seen Doyles and now we get to see Burton's vision of the musical.
I agree Kate2. If Burton holds true to the Logan script and doesn't turn it into a cartoon, it will scare the sh*t out of people.
Oh and Jerry Herman is doing the underscoring...
Carl Magnum, thank you. A voice of reason over a lot of the other bu** $*it in this thread.
As if right now i have no burning desire to see this.
So is this going to be actual actors or is it going to be the classic Tim Burton "Stop-Go" Animation? (that was sarcasum)
