Though blasted by critics and 'serious theater goers', SUMMER seems to be a hit with fans, tourists and casual theater-goers. On other forums there has been very good 'word of mouth'. Again, they're not exactly looking for a powerful story - they're wanting a fun night out at the theater when in New York. This fills the bill. As one person pointed out - "Wicked" was torn apart by critics and serious theater-goers when it first opened at the end of 2003. Now !5 years later....

I don’t think Summer will be hurt by TheCher Show. Cher is an institution but I don’t think her catalog comes any where close to Donna’s. Other than ‘Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves” it’s pretty mediocre. I am looking forward to “O, Holy Night” though.
I think Summer won't be closing up shop all that soon, maybe Labor Day? Two nominated actress playing Donna Summer can't hurt, plus like others have said, people really just want to dance to Summer's music and don't care too much about the story (and certainly don't care about the counter-culture, gay aspect of her life, or lack thereof from the show's plot).
I could theoretically imagine Margaritaville closing, but they do have deeper pockets than say Amelie last year.
Almost every other new show had a great day, so they'll be able to ride that for the month of May. I think we'll see many more shows close after they don't win many Tonys. They can ride the nomination wave until the awards, then some will have to drop off.

They aren't part of the season, though. They are just renting the space from Roundabout."
We are subscribers and we got tickets as part of our plan.

It’s tempting to call Summer the “ A Bronx Tale” of the 2017/2018 season. Shows that thrive at the box office despite poor reviews. Their audiences don’t care about reviews or awards. They just want some fun mixed with some nostalgia. However, I believe A Bronx Tale was pulling in 90% or more of its gross potential at this point in Summer’s run. Meanwhile, Summer pulled in 73% last week. I’m sure it’ll likely play through the summer (no pun intended), if not until January. But given how long War Paint played with horrible percentages, Summer just might play up to 18 months, but I doubt it ever recoups.

We must applaud and give thanks to those audiences. They're the ones keeping our theatre going. And considering the kind of rotten fare that does get raves and awards, they display good sense as well.
Yes, they should have closed Broadway when Jerry Herman retired. Nothing has been any good since.

Strange. It's not listed under their season, and the specifically call it out as not their production on their website. Guess they needed butts in seats?!

I guess so, I'm only a Hiptix Gold member but I haven't seen anything about being able to use in on this show.
If spongebob doesnt win actor, or musical I see it closing up shop on labor day.

Do y'all even realize that Nickelodeon has the $ to keep Spongebob running for as long as they want despite weak ticket sales.... Also the Palace is MASSIVE and it's harder to fill to the brim. Even if it does close, they'll probably tour immediately and it will sell very well.

They might have the money, but no smart company will keep an unprofitable endeavor going. They will likely tour, but I can't see why it's a smart business move for Nickelodeon to keep SpongeBob running if it isn't on track to recoup soon.

Because its a giant advertisement for a Viacom property (not to mention a major critical success) in the heart of Times Square. And even if its not quickly recouping it is still bringing in money. Also, the show is excellent and I’m sure the producers know that and take great pride in it. Long live the Bob

Roundabout sent us the tickets months before it was not doing well.
Am I the only one who thinks Spongebob blows? The music sucks, the design sucks, there is no dramatic tension, the whole thing sucks. The performances are fine and all, but it's not some great piece of theater. David Bowie's song should have been cut. The "poor theater" approach is stupid given the build out of the theater. It is just not a great show. Sure, it's BETTER than you'd expect, but does that make it great? No. It should be gone. The fact that Spongebob and Patrick are carried around on boxes? Lazy. The volcano is a bunch of chairs? Lazy.
I predict:
Children of a Lesser God in 30 days
Once on this Island in 90 days
School of Rock, Play That Goes Wrong and Margaritaville by the fall

The Play That Goes Wrong has exceeded expectations IMO and not a shame if it closes this fall, I guess I will have to look, thought "School Of Rock" was doing fairly well.

When I think of fun, mindless shows I picture Mamma Mia and Good Vibrations. Considering the subject matter, A Bronx Tale is pretty light on the whole because the conflict between C's friends and Jane's friends kind of comes out of nowhere and they don't dwell on the horror of the initial murder. And doesn't Summer deal with molestation? I'm just saying there are easier ways to write a fun, feel good show.

What's the story with OOTI? People seem to like it and are going but the takings look miserable. They can't be making money? How does that work?

Crazy rich people
OOTI will hang on thru the awards, hoping to snag a best revival win. Sadly, they're only chance of survival.
