Exactly...almost any show with half positive reviews will fill the AA theatre - look at 12 ANGRY MEN.
THE PAJAMA GAME's run was nearly entirely sold out before the rave reviews even came out. I tried getting tickets for the show early on in previews for later performances, and could not get two seats together even through June.
But the Pajama Game was starting with nothing so obviously Connick Jr helped boost sales. However, now it is an award winning show with fantastic word of mouth. They had people lining up on the streets for hours to try and get tickets to the show. People even resorted to paying the thousands of dollars for the extension tickets. I really dont think it would have too much trouble playing at the Hilton.
Because people wanted to see "The Sexiest Couple in NYC." They wanted to see Harry.
Trust me, people were not lining up to see THE PAJAMA GAME. Had Harry not been in the show, it would have been a sucess, yes - but not what it had become.
If THE PAJAMA GAME were to open at the Hilton - which it absolutely will not - it would close in a matter of weeks or months. Please.
Yes, but most of that was because of Connick, who is not returning to the show. Tourists did not care about the show, they cared about seeing him.
It won Best Musical Revival, an award that sometimes boosts a show and other times does nothing.
For example, the revival of 42ND STREET played at the Hilton (then the Ford Center of Performing Arts) for nearly four years, won the award, and still closed as a flop.
And 42nd Street actually was more of a tourist attraction than Pajama Game. If you're in town for five days and you could see some old musical called The Pajama Game about a pajama factory with people you've never heard of, or a show about The Wicked Witch with tons of special effects, an ABBA musical, The Lion King live on stage, Chicago, a Four Seasons musical, or a Monty Python musical, what are you going to see?
This is just a guess...but THE PAJAMA GAME starring Craig Bierko and Sara Gettelfinger??????
It would take George Clooney and Madonna to sell The Pajama Game at the Hilton.

Munk, you have it all wrong....it's Craig Bierko and Katie Clarke.
That's right. Everyone in America knows who they are. The entire run would sell out 14 years in advance at the Hilton Theatre. Brilliant.

Come on....Everyone knows who Craig Bierko and Katie Clarke. Oh, wait. Scratch that....unless they advertise it as "See the Trombone Player from that Sex and the City episode and Some Texan in..."
Yeah it would sell just as well as some guy that has never been in a Broadway show before starring in the musical revue of the Four Seasons!
Dude. You are obviously NOT understanding this.
JERSEY BOYS is not a hot ticket due only to John Lloyd Young's excellent rave reviews - JERSEY BOYS had a built in fan base from day one due to the 4 seasons.
And it's not a musical revue.
You've obviously never seen the show. It's brilliant.
Ever heard of the millions of people that read The Vampire Chronicles?
You don't see them on the street in the daytime...

why do you think a tale of two cites is going to flop? This show has been in the making since 1999 and it has some of the best producers of Broadway.
It does not matter if it has the best producers on Broadway. It could have the best performers, the best composer, the best writer, the best director. It does not matter if they cannot all create a solid production.
It could flop, it could be a success. From what I have garnered from the concept recording and word-of-mouth, the show is struggling to find its own unique voice. This show has been in production for quite some time and I think the main reason is because it is struggling creatively. The production team is trying hard to make the show work, but it for some reason, it just can get the proper footing it needs.
A TALE OF TWO CITIES reminds me of the all the 90s shows with pop-flavored scores that tried to bank on the success of the 80s British imported mega-hit musicals. I am referring to shows like JEKYLL & HYDE, THE SECRET GARDEN, and JANE EYRE. All which were adapted from a beloved novel and all of which flopped.
The score of A TALE OF TWO CITIES seems to have a song that is in the style of every possible type of Broadway composer out there. It does not have a single, overall sound to its score.
In addition, it is going to be a tough sell to audiences who are more in favor of musical comedies than dramatic shows.

Is Tale of Two Cities still planning on opening this season? I haven't heard much about it.
This season's Tonys are going to be interesting. There's the normal slate of musicals:
The Pirate Queen (The big mega musical a la Wicked)
Grey Gardens (The underdog show a la Drowsy and Urinetown)
Legally Blonde (The feel good show a la Millie)
High Fedility (The frat boy show a la Dirty Rotten Scoundrels)
Should be interesting.
There's also TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN' and most likely, CURTAINS. Not to mention that other little show, MARY POPPINS.
And let us not forget the probable LOVEMUSIK...directed by Hal Prince, w/Michael Cerveris, music by Kurt Weill/book by Alfred Uhry.
LOVEMUSIK has plans to come to New York...but there's been nothing said about Broadway...where I feel it would not fair so well.

Well, no offense to the The Times They Are A Changin' - But I don't think it will get nominated for Best Musical. Mary Poppins probably will, over High Fedility. I think it will probably come down to the two big shows: Pirate Queen & Mary Poppins and Legally Blonde and Grey Gardens. Of course this is all going off of my opinion because nobody's seen any of these shows yet in their new forms.
Piazzaslight, I know les miz is at the broadhurst, but if Jerry Springer is good enough it can go into the broadhurst after les miz!
JERRY SPRINGER is not going to be on Broadway for a very long time, if at all.
