"You're absolutely right Kev. I also think it's the most boring and *detrimental* thing to do,(bumping up the understudy). I don't think they care about the Amneris role enough to stunt cast it. Besides, it failed so miserably the one time they did it with Taylor Dayne, that they probably abandoned the idea altogether. Imo, the oft practiced "promoting the understudy" thing, as is repeatedly done in shows like RENT, makes the whole production stale. "
I don't understand this way of thinking. Why shouldnt an understudy get a shot at performing the role full-time? I always enjoy seeing understudies, and since they already know the show, it just seems like they'd already have a good grasp of a character, no? Am I the only one who LIKES understudies (having been one myself so many times)!?!
