I hear that Frenchie Davis is amazing. And I think she should be allowed to do it. Or else Jennifer Hudson.

They should bring it back in a new splashy re-thought version.

Remember Effie doesn't need to be fat (and several Effies haven't been -- Julia McGirt was downright skinny when she took over the role). The only reference to Effie's weight in the entire show is during "It's All Over" when Curtis comments that she's "been getting fatter all the time" -- well, that's because, unbeknownst to him, she's pregnant with his baby. Effie's replaced as lead singer midway through Act I primarily because her voice isn't smooth and pop-sounding enough for the Dreams to crossover, not because of her weight.

As for Heather Headley, I don't think she has the upper range for the part (she was flat and/or cracking on Lorrell's high notes in the concert -- Effie and Lorrell require the same upper range and go note for note with each other at times, especially during "Heavy").

I wonder if Jennifer Hudson can act -- early reviews from the road have pointed out Frenchie Davis' acting deficiencies and I wonder if Hudson would have the same problem. I imagine they both can sing the role though.

ME! Just kidding - My favorite Effie (aside from Jennifer of course) was Sharon Brown. She was amazing! Frenchie is great too - saw the tour when it was here, but she seems to be able to be distracted easily. There were some people in the audience that sort of "Talked Back" to the characters on stage from time to time - comments like "Sing it girl!" or "Tha's Right!" and Frenchie was the only one who broke the wall.

Frenchie would be a great Effie - she just needs a great director like many other actors. I was in Pittsburgh working with them for the 3 weeks and she is extremely talented and I feel could act the part if she fixed up some line-delivery and maturity issues in the second half. Robert Clater who staged the CLO production did not direct AT ALL. He simply staged the show (though its far from simple). She has a few diva issues that I feel could be fixed (in reference to the 4th wall complications). But she can sing it far better than any skinny girl

But I won't live alone in a house of regret.

ooh good choices leomax but i would have to put kelly price's name for consideration as "effie". she has an amazing voice.
i can see beyonce knowles as deena, she has the look, the sound...everything. ramona keller is a good choice for lorell also. dayum, why hasn't someone filmed this already?

even if it isn't a feature film, maybe they should consider doing it like the recent "kiss me kate", "cats", "jesus christ superstar" or "victor/victoria" dvds: a filmed stage perfromance..i'd settle for that.

a filmed stage version would be fine..but apparently that's not what "the people" say is in the works..I don't know Kelly Price off the top of my head but Frenchie mentioned her to me.

Kelly Price is a real vocal dynamo . She could most definitely handle the role of Effie.
