Queen couldn't sing that role in a million years -- she's about an octave short vocally and would probably be drowned out by the actresses playing Lorell and Michelle (unless they cast some really limited singers). I've seen "Dreamgirls" performed with non-powerhouses as Effie (Loretta Devine completely embarassed one underpowered little girl who was one of the understudies and had to go on one night) and, to Bennett's credit, the show still almost works, but it undermines the show logically. If Effie can't outsing Deena and Lorrell AND she's a pain in the ass, well heck, why wouldn't Curtis fire her?

However, she can scale back her voice and is capable of that smooth singing style that Curtis is looking for for the Dreams. She also has a look that would have crossed the Dreams right over in a heartbeat. It wouldn't make any sense for Curtis to replace her and later fire her.

Plus, after "Glitter," I'd rather not have to suffer through her "acting" ever again.

mariah would be nice for michelle...
but michelle is supposed to be a much lighter singer.

I've heard the weirdest names and ideas floated out there over the years for the Dreamgirls movie and the revival -- a LOT more out there than Braxton or Carey as Effie (though the Dinklage idea does give one pause) -- so I never automatically dismiss anything. For example:

Back in the 80's, Whitney was almost signed as Deena for the movie at one point. A very good idea, one would think, but she would do the movie only on the condition that the show was re-written so that Deena would get to sing "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going." The fact that the Deena character doesn't actually go anywhere at that point in the show, didn't seem to phase her -- she wanted the change made ("I'm Whitney Houston, Bitch!" -- she also insisted that Bobby Brown be cast as well). Thankfully, the producers passed.

Well, then it just becomes a remake of "Sparkle" with Whitney in the Lonette McKee role (there has been litigation rumblings over the years by the writers of "Sparkle" claiming "Dreamgirls" ripped them off).

Deena, I'll be "nice"

Kelly Price used to be a backup singer for Mariah Carey. She's released 4 CD's (Including a christmas CD) When she first came out she was very overweight. She had the gastric-b surgery and is a lot smaller now. Her biggest hits were "Friend Of Mine" and a re-make of the the Shirley Murdock classic "As We Lay." She was going to play Effie in the Dreamgirls movie w/ Lauryn Hill as Deena but the project was scrapped. I remember reading an article where she said she was scared to sing AITY. Rumor has it that there is a copy of her singing the song floating around the internet. I had a Kelly Price spotting today she was in the audience of the Judge Mathis Show. He announced her during one of his cases.

Jennifer Hudson is an American Idol 3 contestant. She placed 7th and but was a favorite to atleast be in the final 3. She's currently on tour with the American Idol Concert Series. Jennifer said she's had a lot of broadway offers since the show and one of her dreams is to be "Jennifer Holiday's [role] in Dreamgirls." She has some theater experience and worked on a cruise ship before AI. Some of her notable performances on the show were "Circle of Life" "I Have Nothing" and "Weekend in New England"

There! That's the best I can do.

On another note I agree with Touchme. I know Effie's don't have to be big but I like my Effie's big. It just adds a whole other layer to the piece.

i remember in 1986 when it was announced that Whitney Houston was approached to play Deena in the film version of DREAMGIRLS. Around that time I caught Sheryl lee Ralph on a syndicated talk show (i can't remember which one) and she was asked how she felt about it and she stated that although she had great respect for Whitney Houston she was hurt that she wasn't even considered for the role on screen.

And "Deena" I wasn't being sarcastic and "mean" as you put it when I suggested you Google. If you took it that way then I apologize. But that wasn't my intention.
