I was just wondering, between Bernadette Peters and Patti Lupone, which do people prefer as an all around actress/singer??
I really like them equally, I'm just wondering other peoples views.

Patti can circles and circles and circles around Bernadette.
Though I'd say Bernadette can interpret a song slightly better than Patti.
I like Peters, I just overall prefer Patti. Patti can't really belt, and belt better than most. Peters does not really have a belt voice.
It's apples and oranges.
Bernadette is no Evita.
Patti is no Annie Oakley.
I love them both for different reasons but if I had to pick one...I'd go with Bernadette.
Impossible to pick. I like each one for different reasons. Patti is more brash in every sense of the word in her interpretation of songs while Bernadette is softer. Not that she can't be strong (Gypsy recording) but its not as natural. In other words, I can't imagine hearing Patti sing "Children and Art" or Bernadette singing "A New Argentina".
Patti! There is only one role that Peters has done where there really is no other and that is Dot, Sunday In The Park With George. I think Peters is easily equaled and bettered by many actors.
I like them both. However, LuPone's Evita, knocked me sideways. Peters has never done that to me.

I agree, Patti has done so many things to me while listening, that Bernadette has never come close to doing.
I love them both and think that they are amazing. I completely agree that the two actresses are like apples and oranges, but if I had to choose a favorite I think I would say Patti. However, tomorrow that might change and the day after it might change back. I guess it all depends on my mood.
Most definitely Patti, although like jewishboy said, Bernadette is Dot and no one can top her.

Bernadette! All the way!

Patti. Because of five little letters that make up the name Evita.
I personally prefer Bernadette. Granted, I love Patti as well. There is just something about watching Bernadette sing. She just knows how to really communicate a song. Watch her sing "Not a Day Goes By." I dare you to not be moved.
I think Patti delivers quite a nice version of NOT A DAY GOES BY as well.
I think Patti gives wonderful interpretation on her newest album, and it's probally her best interpretation of songs yet.

I like both of them, they are rather diverse in talent.

If I am in the mood for some rafter-shakin' singing - Patti.
If I am in the mood for pure emotion and vulnerability - Bernadette.
But really, it's like asking a parent which child is their favorite.
Like everyone said - totally different. I love them both, but if I had to pick one, I would likely go for Bernadette.
AHHHH! The bitchy Grammar police swoop in to save the day! It's Whom do you prefer. Ok they left... Patti LuPone is my answer. Besides things already said, I can't stand Bernadette's speaking voice.
Apples and oranges. I have adored them both my whole life.
Bernadette Peters.
I love them both, as well as Betty Buckley and Audra! I've seen them all in concert more than once as well as seeing them in most of their shows. Nothing like a dame...or nothing like a diva! (It's hard to be a diva, it's hard to be divine...")

That is a hard call. They both have their strengths and weaknesses.
I have seen Bernadette more than Patti. I love her voice. I enjoyed her in Annie Get Your Gun and Gypsy, but I have to admit that I also preferred Reba McEntire and Tyne Daly in those roles overall as compared to Bernadette. I have also seen Bernadette in concert in Las Vegas and she totally rocked and had a tremendous rapport with her audience.
I love Patti's voice. I think her Reno Sweeney from the Anything Goes recording is surely some of the best belting of Cole Porter's music - her renditions of Anything Goes and Blow, Gabriel, Blow really are flawless. Unfortunately, the only time I have actually seen Patti perform has been in the Sweeney Todd revival, and I was one of the few people who found her performance incredibly listless (although still in good voice). I would be very curious to see her in another role to see how she interprets it.
Based on that, I guess I would have to give the edge to Bernadette.
