re: Whorehouse?

Ann-Margret had suffered an injury in a motorcycle accident which limited her ability to move around and dance, etc. I believe that the problem with her performance was due to that and lousy direction overall. It was a cheap looking production. Even "The Aggie Song" never came to life.

Also,
"As to some previous posters suggestions, dear Anita Morris passed away many years ago, and Fannie Flagg did play the role on tour years ago.".

I wasn't suggesting them for the part. They were Miss Mona's that I have seen on Broadway. In my original post I mentioned that, "My favorite Miss Mona was the late, great Anita Morris.". She left us way too soon!

re: Whorehouse?

Well, Beverly D'Angelo was in the Hair movie. And in all four days of Rockabye Hamlet. re: Whorehouse?

But more importantly -- she played country music singer Lurleen Lumpkin on The Simpsons. What more proof do we need?

Another problem with her performance was the fact that she never opened her mouth. She was the only actor employed with a Rent-esque mouth-mike. Her speech was slurred and unintelligible. Add that to her stumbling around the stage and tripping on the stairs and I doubt it had to do with a motorcycle accident unless she was given a hefty prescription of painkillers. Roxie Lucas was the shining light of the entire production. It's too bad she had so little to do. She would be another good candidate for Mona.

Oh yeah, and please cut A Friend to Me. It's so dull and pointless. Good Old Girl tells us what we need to know and the relationship is peripheral to the plot. We don't need a slow forgettable ballad immediately following two much stronger memorable ballads just before the finale. All of which deal with friendship and/or departure. It's redundancy at its worst.

Mona doesn't dance in the show.

re: Whorehouse?

How about Mary Stuart Masterson... since her mother was the (Tony-winning) original "Mona," and her father directed the Broadway show.

re: Whorehouse?

Oh... I suppose. Depends on how young she was when she started at the ranch.

Personally, I like Reba the best for this.

Or how about Tricia Yearwood?

EDIT: Or how about Becky Ann Baker? She was the original Ruby Rae, and she played Mona when I did the show... and she's fan-friggin-tastic in the part!

"Mona doesn't dance in the show.".

thanks. But she could not move and that is why people complained that she was stiff or afraid of the stairs. She suffered a near fatal stage accident in Vegas when she fell 22 feet on stage so I don't blame her for being tentative about moving around the stairs, on top of the fact that she was in pain from the accident.

It's been 2 decades since her accident. Maybe she's addicted to pain-killers re: Whorehouse?

Mona: Becky Ann Baker

Melvin: Larry the Cable Guy......HA HA! Just kiddin'

I think Becy Ann Baker would be FABULOUS in the role! As long as the set design isn`t the same....ech!

re: Whorehouse?

Her fall from the stage in Vegas was in 1972 and she kept performing on stage for over 20 years before her Whorehouse tour, so I doubt that had anything to do with it.

The tour began after two months of recovery from her motorcycle accident and I saw her four months into the run. I sincerely doubt that if her injuries were bad enough to cause her to sway and stumble through a performance after almost seven months of recovery and four months of performances that she would have been up to a 30-city 18-month national tour of 8 shows a week. Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm not convinced the director or her doctors would permit her to begin performing such a rigorous schedule for such a long period of time unless she was fully healed.

re: Whorehouse?

She fell 22 feet and almost died whil on stage. I'm not sure it's something she will ever get over no matter how long ago it was. She was near death and had to have a lot of surgery just to put her face back together. Also, when she was interviewed in SF she was still limping around from the motorcycle accident. She is not a kid anymore and with all of her previous injuries (car, motorcycle, stage) she might take a little longer to heal.

The production was bad. It was poorly directed and cheaply put together. Having Ann-Margret model those Bob Mackie outfits was a bad decision as well. It made her look like she was standing around and modeling the costumes instead of being part the scene she was in.

re: Whorehouse?

If we're going with "non-names" like Becky Ann Baker, I stand by my Debra Monk idea.

re: Whorehouse?

I saw the Ann-Margret tour and did indeed assume that she was hopped up on painkillers. I knew she'd just been in an accident (she was wearing a splint on her wrist) and it seemed logical that they'd try to keep the show running and just fill her up with vicodin. She seemed lost on stage (which is weird when you consider it was Ann-Margret) and went up on several lyrics, much to the dismay of the cast members around her. It was a train wreck and while I do love me a good train wreck, it was a shame to have what will probably be my one chance to see Ann-Margret live marred by something that really was probably out of her control.

And in think Beverly D'Angelo is a smashing idea.

Becky Ann Baker and Debra Monk are only no names to people who don`t know a thing about theatre! They are big names on b`way!

If that were the case, Julia Roberts wouldn't be starring on Broadway right now.

New Yorkers aren't the main Broadway audience anymore.

Julia Roberts as Miss Mona. It won't matter if she can sing or not since the audience would only be attending to see Ms Roberts and not the show.

re: Whorehouse?

Actually, as wonderful as Becky Ann Baker is (aka, Becky Gelke from my days!), she wouldn't sell tickets to the masses, and I know that.

She is such a fantastic "Mona" though, and I'd place good money on her winning a Tony for it... no joke... So, I felt compelled to throw her hat in the ring for that reason alone.

But this is the REAL WORLD and since it's not an original show anymore (which seems to be the only place you can get away with no-names or up-and-coming household names), a Whorehouse revival would have to be "star-studded."

So, how about MICHAEL JACKSON as Miss M??? re: Whorehouse?

Actually, how about Bette Midler as a divine "Miss M?"
