I was watching Best Little Whorehouse in Texas last night, wouldn't a revival starring Bernadette be awsome? She could totally play the part.
OH YES!!! Without a doubt. Bernadette is just naughty and cheeky enough to make a fantastic Mona. Plus, she has the verve and star power to make it a hit. Get her a dreamy and bankable leading man and we are talking HIT!!!! I hope Bernie returns to Bway soon. :)
Bernadette would be nice, but Reba McEntire would be better.

I agree. It was a really bad movie. It was like "Smokey and the Bandit Go To The Whorehouse". All the good songs were taken out and replaced by Dolly Parton songs.
If they ever revive this, it will need a good director. I saw the last tour with Ann-Margret and it wasn't very good. I saw the original on Broadway many times. My favorite Miss Mona was the late, great Anita Morris.

If you're talking about a revival of the Broadway show and not the film, you don't want a dreamy looking man as co-star. Henderson Forsyth was *terrific* (better than amazing) both Off and On Broadway as the sheriff, but the role as originally written hardly calls for a dreamy looking man. As far as I'm concerned Peters as Mona would be worse than Dolly Parton's on-screen Mona. Maybe Audra McDonald and Brian Stokes Mitchell?
the movie is ok i think it does it's job... just like some of the more recent films.......
I don't know about Carolle i mean i lover her to death but not as Miss Mona.

Bernadette Peters or Reba would be sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo AWESOME!!!!!!!! Ann Margret sucked in the tour. I did a production of this in MS in February! Our Mona and Melvin were AWESOME!!!!!!!!!
I LOVE the movie!
Personally, I think Reba is too "wholesome" for the role and she's doing the "Reba Experience" in Vegas til god knows when anyhow. I think Bernadette would be great. I still think a sexy leading man would sell tickets, even though the role doesn't call for it. Not that Bway is short of sexy dudes to fit the bill. I'm sure the Naked Cowboy from Times Square would be available. Hey and if you want to have a vamp in the role maybe Ute Lemper could bring soemthing to the mix as a German madame. hahahahahaha

OUCH.
Maybe Bernadette could go at it first. Reba could replace her. Then win the McEntire Tony Award.

Audra McDonald? What a bizarre casting choice.
It's like saying, Daphne Rubin-Vega as Fantine...

"Audra McDonald? What a bizarre casting choice."
No more bizarre than Audra Mcdonald as Lizzie
Damn, that show was fun.The band was wonderful and Tommy Tune's direction and choreography was hilarious. And Henderson Forsythe was the FILTHIEST man to ever grace Broadway. He was so delicious with those "I'll whump you so low you'll have to roll down your sox to s**t" lines.
A funny saide, they had a big sign on the top of the 46th Street Theater which just read "WHOREHOUSE" and a friend of mine told me at the time that tourists sometimes showed up expecting to find a real brothel.
I could see Megan Mulally as Miss Mona. Peters would come across as a little girl playing dress-ups.

As to some previous posters suggestions, dear Anita Morris passed away many years ago, and Fannie Flagg did play the role on tour years ago.
It's funny, but with the current conservative climate in America right now, I am not sure Whorehouse would be a hit. The Ann-Margret tour was extremely faithful to the original (whether you liked her or not) and didn't do gangbusters on the road.
I still hold that Beverly D'Angelo would be a fabulous Mona.
Two reasons the Ann Margret tour failed:
Ann Margret was beyond awful.
It was too faithful to the original production. The staging needs to be dusted off and updated considerably. It comes across as dated and flat. Jack O'Brien, Jerry Mitchell or Des MacAnuff could probably breathe some new life into the show and make it a commercial success.
I changed my mind. Bernadette is just wrong for the part. I'd rather see her play Dolly.
Calvin - Can Beverly sing? That's an interesting idea. Not so sure she'd sell tickets, though. For that matter, Sally Mayes would make an excellent Mona.
