The may have sold some more tickets, but I suspect that it was more to offset the fact that Nunsense is a terrible show to put on in an 11,000 seat theatre. It is sooooooo small. By adding the youth ensemble, they artificially made the show seem bigger than it was.

I've never been to The Muny but sounds like, from this thread, they always add kids to the productions to help fill out the huge stage. And I'm sure lots of relatives attend the shows to see their kids, so it's a smart revenue-generating idea to add them to the productions.
