Come From Away, Groundhog Day, and War Paint weren't announced for Broadway until the fall I think. We don't know what the season will truly look like yet.

Yeah, the shows that I listed were all shows that I hope will announce a Spring transfer.
There's absolutely no reason for me to get attacked like this over my opinion, which isn't even a super controversial one. I'm just saying that I hope we see more high quality musical theatre to add to the mix of these more commercial shows.

I think it's all just very cyclical. The past few seasons have seen some brilliant original(ish) musicals. And this seasons is no exception. I'm still surprised producers are so hesitant on taking on new, orignal stories. Or at least shows that come from less commercial material - Fun Home, Light in the Piazza, Spelling Bee, heck, even Groundhog Day.

There may very well be. But the gestation period for a new original musical is somewhere between four to six years. Expect to see the Dear Evan Hansen knock-offs and Great Comet sequels in 2022.
On what may be a positive note for everyone, we have also been promised My Fair Lady from Bartlett Sher and Carousel with Jessie Mueller.

Regarding Litttle Dancer, Stephen Flaherty did say in a recent interview that the show "is now Broadway bound, hopefully for next season" (http://musicaltheatrereview.com/interview-composer-stephen-flaherty-on-bringing-anastasia-to-broadway/). As always with these things, we'll believe it when we see it, but some hope is better than no hope.
(This second thought is based on no evidence, and it's probably not a suitable show for Broadway as such anyway, but I hope there's a high-profile production of Daniel Zaitchik's Picnic at Hanging Rock musical sometime soon [and a full cast recording!]. It's the 50th anniversary of the novel's publication this year, as good an excuse as any. Just putting it out there to the theatre gods.)

Just to put things in perspective, there are classic Broadway musicals from less than exalted sources. Did people bitch and moan when Annie was announced-" A show based on a comic strip- why waste a Broadway house on that?" My first musical was It's a Bird, It's a Plane... I know it flopped, but it has a great score. So don't tell me SpongeBob can't work out just because of its origins.

I have no problem with Beautiful, Jersey Boys, On Your Feet on Broadway. Clearly many of these are more entertaining than traditional musicals. Jesse's performance is not compromised because she is meant to evoke Carole King.
But I'm not too sure about these shows being placed in the Best New Musical category for the Tony award. A large part of the creativity of a new musical centers around the composer and lyricist struggling to come up with an original score with songs to be remembered fifty years in the future (and still to be denigrated as "show tunes"
. The audience leaves one show humming "The Best of Times" and enters the other show humming "I Feel the Earth Move." Seems a little unfair.

Isn't "Freaky Friday" coming in this season? I saw it in La Jolla and even then it was almost ready. After it's Houston and Cleveland engagements it should be as perfect as it's going to get...

I hope! It was great at Signature theater, and I'm a fan of Heidi's performance. But, I think I read somewhere that it wasn't going to transfer just stick to regional? I'm probably wrong but I'm pretty sure there has been no word of a transfer. But it is a great show!
