Joanna Gleason won the Featured Actress Drama Desk, and LuPone won the Lead Actress DD for Anything Goes. Then by Tony time, Gleason had been bumped up to Lead, upsetting the Patti train (she was guaranteed that Tony), and it made way for Judy Kaye to win the Featured Tony for Phantom."
No. She did not put herself forward for consideration. She missed the San Diego try-outs, and only stepped into the role last minute as a personal favor to Sondheim. The Witch was a supporting role, and she (rightfully) regarded herself as Leading material. Seems ridiculous now, and with hindsight maybe she would have acted differently, but she only saw herself as a “placeholder" until a regular Witch was cast.

And what are you smoking? Sutton danced the part beautifully but to compare the two vocally would be a setup for Sutton. The woman isn’t a singer like that. Shes a dancer who sings.

Also what is this about Sutton reviving Anything Goes yet again? Surely this is not happening... I know people dislike her on these boards and people also don't want another Gypsy but I am looking forward to Sutton's Roundabout Madame Rose in five years' time, to echo the LuPone-after-Peters production history from all those years ago.

Sutton would be worse casting than Audra was. Hopefully producers understand now that the role does not work without a performer that can withstand the vocal demands of the role (arguably, Sutton doesn't have a shred of the attitude for the character either). Audra acted it beautifully, sure. But as soon as she opened her mouth to sing, we were in the realm of Tosca, not Gypsy.
After Music Man, I'd have hoped that Sutton's vocal ability would be more soberly examined, but alas here we are.
