How was Midler not too ethnic? She's more Jewish than Jesus. How was Bernadette not too ethnic? Dolly is from Ireland originally - Dolly Gallagher. Didn't I hear somewhere that Tovah Feldshuh played Dolly regionally with an Irish accent? How camp.

Yes he said LuPone was too ethnic. She said so on Watch What Happens Live. And I love her follow up comment that she would rather do The Matchmaker because she doesn't "understand" Hello, Dolly! So perfectly catty.
Well Patti also said she didn’t ‘understand’ Rose either before doing the part. At this point, I think we can take any perceived criticism of parts to be a bit meaningless. I think if it were 2013 and she was offered the part I’m sure she would have done it. Now as she is a bit older I’m not sure. Also, it does feel a little close since the last revival (though probably more time has passed than between the previous Gypsy revivals now. Time is flying).
Since Patti’s voice appears to be holding up well I’d love a splashy revival mounted around her in a few years to bid her career and era farewell. Just over 10 years ago we had Patti, Bernadette, Mazzie, Donna all on Broadway around the same time. These days are well and truly over. So happy to have been there.
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
(And that's if there's a special desire to see her. Frankly, I'd rather film the last revival as a special and put Bette opposite Billy Crystal. They played well off each other in Parental Guidance, and I can only assume that he wasn't approached for the revival because both Bette and Billy would make the budget astronomical.)
I can't believe it's now a longer timespan since the Midler revival than the time between the Peters and LuPone Gypsys - really puts it into perspective how controversial it must have been to open that 2008 Gypsy

I wish Burnett had done way more onstage than she did through her career, both in terms of revivals and new works. So many great roles she could have done in that 30 years between Fade Out-Fade In and her return to Broadway in Moon Over Buffalo, or in that span between Putting It Together and her few weeks stint in Love Letters.
