Really...I want to know!

Great story

Great existing music by two well know musical theatre composers who could easily write more music

Great characters

The latest "trend" in Broadway show

I know this has been commented on and asked about before, but I still don't know why it hasn't happened yet!

There are thousands of GOOD musicals that never get "picked up" by producers.

I don't know what the deal is with this one...

sometimes there are legal issues, money issues, production issues, material issues, etc.

Ahrens and Flaherty are working on a bunch of stuff right now. Many writing teams will work on 2 - 3 projects at once. This one might not be a priority.

20th Century FOX owns it so they'd either have to agree to release (sell) the rights to another company or decide to produce it.

Not sure why they would. It received a good reception back in '97 and I'm sure if it became a musical, they would be the ones to produce it.

Becuse withe the cartoon movie availabe on DVD there is no need for it to be on stage. What would be gained?

A musical version on ANASTASIA called ANYA opened on Broadway in 1965 and flopped. The authors later revised it as THE ANASTASIA AFFAIRE but it never got beyond a regional staging.

Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

There's book problems.

Anastasia as done in this particular film was fictional enough, but now what really happened in 1918 has come out.

I don't think the mass murder of the Russian royal family along with several others followed by the bodies being stripped and thrown into a mineshaft only to be retrieved and buried in the middle of a country road is a proper denoument for a musical. Call me old fashioned.

Its an opera not a musical and not a feel good show either.

My point exactly.

Oh BATB is entertaining and I know it ran for years, but there was nothing gained by doing it as a stage musical.

LION KING at least brought a unique visual look to the piece (but I still find the book and score weak.)

WOSQ - the film is a fantasy and does not relate to what happened to the family. The play Anastasia is also an excellent non musical show. Not every idea has to be historically accurate if it is a good show.

Batrok the bat would be a riot on stage just as the characters in Beauty and the Beast were.

I'd only want to see it on Broadway if they humanized Rasputin a little bit. I mean, sure, he had a bad reputation in real life (namely for screwing everything that walked in a ten-city radius), but come on. He was, essentially, a holy man. He was not known to be vindictive...indeed, he very much loved the Tsar and his family and would have done nothing to harm them.

Now that I think about it, a musical about Rasputin would be much more interesting.

I think fan-casting Sutton Foster in shows is HIGHLY overdone, however she WOULD be pretty great as Anastasia. And how awesome would it be to have Angela Lansbury reprising her film role on the stage?!

I've been wanting this film to get on the stage for YEARS now. I saw ANASTASIA ON ICE way back when and thought it was brilliant!
"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

Actually, I wasn't thinking of basing a "jukebox musical" on *one* song by Boney M. I was thinking more of an actual musical about Rasputin, but whatever. Immaturity rules the day once again.

I'm sorry. With all the words in a thread just being typed out on a screen and no audible accent to offer helpful clues, I find it very easy to forget that many Americans have no sense of humour. I hope my lack of consideration for your unfortunate condition hasn't led to grief and weeping on your part. re: Why hasn't the Ahrens and Flaherty 'Anastasia' been turned into a stage

Firstly, a lot was gained. In terms of commercial theatre, and why it exists, BEAST made a LOT of money, and continues to have huge success in regionals, and an upcoming NETworks tour.

Secondly, just because you (and I, actually) didn't enjoy LION KING doesn't mean millions haven't, including lots of kids who came out of that show wanting to see more Broadway shows. More gained.

LITTLE MERMAID is also on DVD, but I'd wager that Disney has no regrets about bringing that one to the stage, and dispite what many would argue is acrually a weak product, it's doing quite well.

ANASTASIA, imho, is a better animated musical than any of the aforementioned. It deserves a stage life. I'd invest in a heartbeat!
