But does wearing a red handkerchief all over make Dolly the "ee" or the "er"?!?

Maybe in the next revival she'll enter wearing Roger De Bris' dress.

Dolly is always in red because she is a sinner... a woman of ill repute.

She represents pure evil.

I knew DP would not let us down with his vast knowledge of Hello Dolly.

In the book Jerry Herman: Poet of Showtune by Stephen Citron it says:
"Streisand had her differences with almost everyone in the key Harmonia Gardens scene. A cause celebre was the design and color of the gown. She rejected a beautiful scarlet one that Irene Sharaff had designed and whose blood-red color the producer and playwright felt was psychologically essential to Dolly's return to living. In the press Streisand rreasoned that Carol Channing's Dolly had worn a similar one and had been photographed again and again in it. The star refused to leave her dressing room until promised that a new design in gold would be forthcoming. At last Sharaff presented her with a richly beaded topaz dress that pleased her."

I know a lot of costumers, and they tell me that if you want a character to be noticed put them in red. If a character appears on stage in red the audiences attention will be drawn to them. And since they have told me that, everytime I go to a show I have noticed that.

I sometimes wish designers wouldn't copy the originals...color is one thing, but I hate how you nearly always seen Mrs. Lovett's dolled up like Angela Landsbury, pigtail buns and all. Couldn't the director and designer say...not copy everything the original production did?
