What has made putting up shows so much more expensive than before?
The economy, I imagine. Lots of things are more expensive nowadays than they used to be.

Why do seats at professional sports events cost hundreds of dollars? They don't even have SETS to change.
Exactly, why is theater more expensive now than before? Obviously nothing else is more expensive than before. Only theater.
why the sarcasm? Obviously everything is more expensive now, but specifically theatre. It seems like people want spectacle now. Can anyone think of any other reasons
There is no reason. Theater goes up like everything goes up. Some shows have big production values others don't. Things cost more because people are willing to pay more.

People have always wanted spectacle. That's not new.
It's not like Broadway shows were done on a bare stage before. They've had big shows since the beginning.
I wasn't being sarcastic, that was my legitimate answer.
I was!
isn't there more to be fleshed out here though, besides the fact that the economy has changed? Musicals could be mounted for $250,000, and now its over 10 million to get your show on Broadway. Thats a huge change
What else do you need? Things cost more. People need to be paid more. Audiences are willing to pay more.

I'm not sure you do. "Musicals could be mounted for $250,000, and now its over 10 million to get your show on Broadway. Thats a huge change"
That's literally inflation.
do you think maybe more people used to see theatre before? Maybe that could potentially be a reason?
yes inflation is that cause of it all, and nothing more. You're literally a genius neonlightsxo

Because producers are greedy.
No, more people see theatre now.
Can someone tell me why apples cost a dollar when they used to be 25 cents? Maybe people ate more apples before?
Not necessarily. Book of Mormon is a hot ticket right now, and since so many people are willing to see it, they've decided to jack up the prices because, well, they can. Depending on the show, a blockbuster hit with high demand for tickets (meaning many people are clambering to see it) could have higher ticket prices. With that in mind, I'd say that there are more audience members now than there have been in the recent past.

Why are sneakers $280?
Because people want more spectacle!
why do you say that sarcastically? Do you think they would ever put up a show the size of spider man in the 60s? i was also thinking about royalties for jukebox musicals. People like to see whats known to them instead of completely original stuff
Pretty sure spiderman wasn't a thing in the 60's
