Hey, the actual story took place virtually in my backyard. I read about the whole situation in the local newspapers. I saw the documentary and still didn't like the show. It just left to many questions unanswered.
Did anyone go to the workshop of their next show, Happiness or does anyone know someone who did? Was it a closed workshop? What is the score like? I can't wait to hear it!

Why did it flop?
Because actual, *good* art never really lasts on Broadway for a long time.
Christine Ebersole (and her husband) put in most of the money for Grey Gardens so they could buy her that Tony. . . . A Tony which, in my opinion, she deserved to win.
Stew's situation in PASSING STRANGE was similar, I suppose. In the end the show didn't make much money for the producers, but Stew has a new feather in his cap. . . . And a well-deserved one, I think.
Maybe if they had sprung for real hats instead of towels. . .
Gizmo is 100% incorrect. Ebersole didn't put a dime into the show.
I think people are forgetting why GREY GARDENS closed.
Mary Louise Wilson's contract was up, and she was not renewing.
So if the show was to continue, the creative team would have had to find a replacement for one of the two raved about aspects of the show.
The show was struggling the way it was, and ticket sales certainly weren't going to get BETTER by replacing one of its two Tony winning stars.
So the show, logically, closed up shop. If Mary Louise Wilson's contract wasn't up, the show would have run at least until October.

The story just isn't that appealing, IMO.

It wasn't awful, but I didnt care for much of Act 1. I agree that the more interesting story lies in the "how?" or "why?" aspect of the show.
Too cerebral for the tourists.
If you ask them to shell out a small fortune for tickets, they want to see it all up on the stage. They feel cheated if there are no falling chandeliers or helicopters.
Actually, the chandeliers did fall.
Just during intermission.
My problem with the show was that it should have been a play with music rather than a musical. I found much of the score (especially in Act I) to be of little interest.
Well, when you create your stage version of GG, it can be a play with music.
This wasn't your stage version of GG.
