Oh dear.
I agree that there are some high schools, probably the ones with special performing arts programs, that could legitimately pull this show off.
The one in the video clearly cannot.
What a nightmare. Is he even wearing a mask?

Bwaylvsong - the way you talk, your high school could do ANYTHING. puhlease.
Phantom is going to be a big deal for the next couple of years... MTI is working hard to create a School Edition for high schools.
should be real interesting, my friends. ugh.

Posted: 4/10/08 at 9:32pmThe photo at the beginning of the thread is definitely from the production at Fairfield High School just outside of Cincinatti. Generally, they have a very strong arts program with a nationally renowned show choir the "Choraliers" and a very dedicated group of students willing to put there time and energy into a production like this. Last year they did a staging of Les Miserables

Still, Fran Drescher's looking great these days!
Well I'm glad somebody else saw it.

Oh dear god, everything about that clip was horrendous, neither was singing well or acting at all!
What's the point of making The Phantom a bass if he can't even sing that? It was so embarrasing watching him try to hit those low notes, hell, every single note he had; and Christine's little aria at the end...jeez, my ears are bleeding.
And what's up with the set? I don't get it, is that supposed to be a skyline of New York? Why? That doesn't make a lick of sense?

While I'll admit that the video was cringeworthy, as far as the picture goes, I'm amazed at the mean-spirited crap spewed in this thread. For all any of us know, these kids are truly talented, and one would bet they're not working with a multi-million dollar budget... I mean, just a guess, durrrr...
How sad to see such snarky BS on this board. High schools ought to try to take on challenging material and do their best.
We need this far more than we need one more freakin' high school version of Oklahoma!

"Bwaylvsong - the way you talk, your high school could do ANYTHING. puhlease."
Well, I went to the "Fame" School. While my HS certainly couldn't do absolutely ANYTHING, we have a lot more possibilities than most schools. During my four years there, we did the musicals Les Miz, WSS, Hair, and Ragtime, the opera Dido and Aeneas, and the operettas Orpheus in the Underworld, The Merry Widow, and The Pirates of Penzance. This thread is specifically about Phantom, which I do think my HS could pull off. In our Vocal program, we start classical voice training the day we enter school. Therefore, by Senior year, over a hundred students would have had intense classical training for four years. There are a number of students that I know would be able to handle each part, high Es and all. And as I said, if you lowered the keys to some of the songs by just a whole step, they would be a lot easier.
And yes, that clip is horrible and doesn't represent the level of talent and training that would be found in a Performing Arts school.
PS: I love your name, TooDarnHot.

Posted: 4/10/08 at 11:54pmThe girl playing Christine actually looks very pretty. Who knows? Maybe they are awesome. Maybe even better than the Broadway cast...how do we know? There are in fact a lot of really talented people out there. Just saying...

I'm guessing that clip was from a talent show or revue or such, not from a full hs production of Phantom.

Oh, and Mekroth, I *DID* watch the clip. Take some reading comprehension courses. The clip and the pic are from two totally different productions.
Way to pay attention there, dude...

Posted: 4/11/08 at 6:08amwell the singing and "performance" on the video clip was just plain bad. Budget has nothing to do with it but talent (or lack of) certainly does. Now if these kids WERE truly talented then, by definition, they would have shown at least a whiff of their talent vocally.

I love all things PHANTOM... But... oh my God.
The picture, not so bad I guess. It IS High School and all. Not a fan of the black band holding the mask...
But the video... *shivers*
And how did they get the rights to do this?!

Posted: 4/11/08 at 11:02amYou people need to chill. High school musicals are not supposed to replicate the quality seen on Broadway. The point is to allow students to participate in the arts...no matter how badly. Anyone going to a high school musical (any...they can butcher any show, no matter how simple) expection a professional quality production is just being ridiculous. While yes the richer schools will be able to pull off more shows, the point is for active involvement, not Tony-winning quality work. You people really need to get lives.

I saw Ragtime. It was good.
That video, however, is horrendous.

I don't get it, is that supposed to be a skyline of New York?
Well, that was a clip of the last staged reading for the upcoming Phantom of Manhattan, was it not?
I jest. RIP, St. Otto.
