Before you jump in and denounce this, hear me out.
I have a friend who's about 24 years old, and he's a musical director for some children's theatre. He's also a genius with writing operas in English, and he just recently finished a score using Wicked as the story. Honestly though, it was brilliant and it REALLY worked out.

i wanna hear it....please send it when u get the chance.
Wait, using the story of Wicked the musical or Wicked the novel? The Elphaba of the novel could so be an operatic heroine! I so would love to listen to it, do let us know when there's any music samples available.
I would love to hear the new ending to DG. Seeing as I'm an lyrical soprano :)

Come to think of it, I think Wicked would make a better opera than pop musical. Mind you, I haven't read the whole book, but I have read some. The style of Gregory Macguire's book is more serious than the musical suggests. And from what I've read, I can't necessarily see the characters bursting into and uptempo pop song. I could, however, see it as an opera, or at least a more classical musical.
Can't wait to hear the clips!

i cant wait to hear, either!!
yeah, would love to hear it!
thats a cool idea!
And how did he manage to get the rights for this?
This sounds so interesting. Would love to hear it.
Liz- I'm not sure but I can assure you he did. He's only gotten the rights for the end of Deying Gravity, and he's getting the rights to use the story line this week.
Yes I'll make sure it's alright with him tomarrow since he's touchy about something being heard before until he's absolutley satisfied with it. But it's coming he says.
So I'll post tomarrow with the link.
I believe it's more of the musical...not quite sure about that either.
Hmm..."Wicked" could work as an opera. I think it would be much better suited to that than the treatment it got, but that's just me.
not "the rights too" .. more like "permission too"

"not 'the rights too' .. more like 'permission too'"
Thank you. People always make that mistake (I'm guilty as well). "Rights" means that you "own" the material. Universal owns the rights to Wicked (I assume, but could be wrong). Anyone that is not the "owner" is the licensee and is given permission. If they (the licensees) had the "rights", then Universal (or whoever) would no longer have them.
I'm confused. Is he adapting Stephen Schwartz's songs, or Maguire's original story? If you say he changed the ending to "Defying Gravity," then he's using the Broadway score that already exists?
I have no idea how that's possible.
I thoroughly approve of Wicked the Opera! But then, I think everything should be an opera so that I can stop working of my belt. =)
