I searched for this first, but the search is quite unorganized so I figured it would be quicker to post here. Sorry if you've answered the question multiple times.
I just got an internship in NYC and I'll be moving there next week. My friend is going to come visit and I'd love to take her to a show. She's never seen Wicked and I've only seen the tour so I thought it would be a great idea.
I know there is a lottery, but I was hoping since we'd be going not during a holiday there would be a chance that there wouldn't be as many people. What days are best for the lottery? I understand there are on average 200 people, so I would like to pick a day that wouldn't be a waste of a train ticket for her.
If we can't see Wicked we'd love to see another show...but she's a bit picky when it comes to musicals. She hated Rent, she didn't like how rockish it was. She prefers more classical musicals and operas...so do you guys have any suggestions?
Also we're both students, looking for cheap tickets.
Thank you!

The Wicked lotto is always crazy. But if your friend prefers classical musicals, why take your chances with the Wicked (which has more of a rock-pop score)?
Some of the classics on Broadway today: South Pacific, A Little Night Music, West Side Story
Does your friend enjoy straight plays?

She says she wants to see Wicked, so I'm thinking she really doesn't know what kind of musicals she likes either. I know she was in Sound of Music in High School though.
I'm unfortunately the opposite and I really like a lot of the more popular musicals. I loved Spring Awakening, Rent, Wicked, Legally Blonde, Aida, Avenue Q...so I'm hoping that we both can be happy with one since it seems our tastes are a bit different.
She does enjoy straight plays, she is going for a theater major right now and we have done some shows together in college.

Best time to do Wicked lottery is Sunday matinee. I asked a guy inside the theatre where the cancellation line would be if I didn't win the lottery. He told me, but then said I had a decent chance because Sunday matinees are usually less crowded. I would guess there were 100-150 there. Oh, and BTW, we won!
I would concur South Pacific is wonderful. But, it's not "fun", and my 22-year-old daughter fell asleep, but if you like classics, it's a good choice.
Mamma Mia is so fun, and the current cast is great. If your friend likes Abba, this would be a good choice. Not sure about rush tickets. There were empty seats when we went, so I'm guessing they do rush. We got great seats at TKTS booth.
Haven't seen it, but I hear good things about Million Dollar Quartet. I hear it's more of a concert, but it's rock and roll, not rock music. Everyone wins the lottery, at least they were 2 weeks ago.
If you don't have to see a musical, Lend Me A Tenor or 39 Steps are great. So, so funny.

Posted: 6/4/10 at 1:05amI recently went up to see "Promises" (which I highly recommend) and tried the Wicked Lottery the next day for the Wednesday matinee. We didn't win but it was pretty slow, there were only about 50-75 people present. Granted, this was the week following the bombing attempt and before most college students got out for summer, so it was a pretty slow week period. But the night before, I was eves dropping on some girl's convo with her grandmother about different shows and she tipped me off that she got tickets to Hair because they didn't sell all their lottery tickets. So after no success at the Wicked lottery, we ran over to Hair and sure enough they had tickets left over from the lottery. I don't know if this will still be the case, but it couldn't hurt to try! I loved Hair! and who wouldn't love a chance to dance on a broadway stage :) otherwise, I highly suggest snagging Promises student tix. its a nice fluffy, funny show.
