Wicked Tony Performance

Posted: 10/13/06 at 1:51pmI saw the show a month before the Tonys and she was fine. Just a wee bit rough on that final note in Defying Gravity. But not enough to ruin it. The evening I saw it, the "click" was quite audible throughout the theatre.

Re: the Time Dragon... Yes I have seen the showe many times. I should have phrased it differently so as not to confuse people or seem like I meant both stage show and book.
My apologies.

Posted: 10/13/06 at 5:32pmDid Idina actually confirm that she was sick? That's the thing I don't like. So many people say, "oh, she was sick that day. That's why she doesn't sound superb like she usually is." when that actress that was playing Elphaba for that particular performance was just having an off-day. It just bugs me when people just assume an actor is "sick" because they did not give a 100% performance.

The problem with Idina's vocals had more to do with her emotions getting out of control for that particular Tony performance. It shows at the very beginning of that scene... she was letting her emotions get away from her. It works well in that initial dialogue... "It's the Wizard who should be afraid... of ME." I remember saying, "uh-oh," right then to the group I was with. "Rein it in, or you'll never get through it."
She never was able to "pulled back" emotionally enough to gain control. It's a case of an actor "going too far."
But to say that she wasn't giving 100 percent is crazy. It's all right THERE in the broadcast... The problem is, she gave 128 percent, due to her heightened emotional state that evening. And that's NOT good when you're trying to control your singing voice on a very demanding song.

Posted: 10/15/06 at 11:07amJust so EponineAmneris and Munk know, I saw the show in 2004 w/ Eden on for Idina just 4 days after the Tonys. I also saw it w/Stephanie in Los Angeles. The Time Dragon is pointless. Also, what is that noise after she says, "Everyone deserves the chance to fly!"?

I could not abide Menzel as Elphaba in NY. At all. I like the musical though and I saw her twice during her run (early on and later) and then, luckily, I caught an understudy the third time who could sing without the gasping etc and was capable of acting the part rather than going through the motions.
When I saw it in London I was really not looking forward to hearing her ruin the songs again with voice breaks and the like but god what a terrific and surprising transformation. She was vocally thrilling. Truly truly thrilling. Her acting was spot on, very convincing and she stole the show almost effortlessly.
