And technically, didn't it win like two or three Tonys? For designing and stuff, right?
Oh, and yeah.. IDINA won the Tony, right? Oh yeah. That's what I thought.
The original poster thought it deserved Best Musical. But she saw it last week for the first time, so I am assuming she didn't see any of the competitors. (if she has seen any other show at all)
aegeusrocks, sweetheart, PLEASE stop referring to The American Theater Wing as "The Academy". This isn't the Oscars, darling. This is Broadway, welcome.
Wicked is a hit among the audiences and fans.
Wicked is a financially sucessful show, but not critically.
Who cares about the critics we shouldn't be basing our theatre veiwing on what one person thinks....
and also Idina is green covered screaming banchie that can't sing properly, yes it was rigged i mean why else did she win
Thank you! I definately agree. I never let critics stop me, because usually what they think is bad can actually be great.
Typically, we as theatre goers are critics.
In my personal opinion, Wicked didn't win Best Musical because it wasn't the Best Musical that year.
I think Wicked has two or three really great songs, but the story is rather simplistic and it has quite a few weaknesses.
All that being said, if it brings younger people to the theatre and gets them hooked and helps make "theatre cool again" like Rent did in the mid to late 90s (and will probably do again with the movie release) I am all for it - flawed or not.
Edit: Now if they'd only make BroadwayWorld Search Feature: The Musical and cast Ideenzala Matzala as the lead, both worlds could live in peace.

Wicked was the second Broadway show I've seen and I think it definately should have won best musical. I am a freshman in college and is located close to NYC so I now have the opportunity to see a lot of shows. The only other show I saw was Brooklyn and thought it was amazing as well but not as good as wicked. What other shows should I see that are just as good or better than wicked?
That are currently playing that I personally feel are better than Wicked:
The Light in the Piazza
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee
Rent
Sweet Charity
The Producers
Avenue Q
If you like plays I understand that Pillowman is fantastic, but it's closing soon.
Although, the problem is that these are all different in style to Wicked. It may simply be that you like a specific style of musical and there is nothing wrong with that.
While it does tend to get a little annoying when we have a lot of "Wicked is the best" posts in here, I value everyone's opinion and you have definately expressed in a more articulate way than we are used to.
If it seems that people were rude, it's just that everyone is quick to jump on these things.

wow, Patronus! i'm in awe at your tolerence!
Yeah, it's early and I am sure it is the indirect effect of watching so much Katrina coverage lately.
She doesn't strike me as one of these trollish I<3Idina-esque posters who has no interest in intelligent discussion, but rather as a Wicked fan who is at least interested in hearing other people's opinions.
There is still plenty of time for me to be proven wrong though.
Alright...I am off for a jog.

and yet the latest newbie with the most ridiculous post.....yawn
Ave Q's win had a lot to do with their "plan of attack" towards voters. VOte with your heart, I believe was their slogan. I believe they even promised a lot of out of town voters a tour, which as we know, never happened.

Excuse me, why is this such a ridiculous post? Is it common on this board to criticize people who just post a question in hope that people will talk about it? If people dont like the topic why cant you ignore it and not post some stupid and rude comment about it. You people are not very friendly to new people on this board!

Yes. We're friendly to the people on this board, as long as you don't post more threads about Wicked. Use a search button. Use google. Anything. Someone posted the number of wicked threads, but I've forgotten. It was a lot. This is just one more on the list.
But, welcome to BWW! Have fun and I promise we're not mean.
I think people's reaction has a lot to do with timing, too. Yes Wicked lost best musical, like it or not. But it was at over a YEAR AGO. So, the post is a little out of date. There were, I am sure, countless posts about the subject then.
You are very lucky to be in school so close. Catch a few more shows. I bet you would love Avenue Q. And if Ana takes over when Shoshana departs, you should see Wicked again.

I would love to see Ana and Megan!
Megan and Idina - that would kill me!

I agree, Caroline or Change should have won. I very much enjoyed Wicked and am actually seeing it again on tour. I can't bring myself to see Avenue Q 1. Because I just don't like the OBCR so I know I probably won't enjoy the show and 2. They pretty much, in my opinion, bought that Tony for Best Musical. My choice for Best Actress would have been Ms. Chenoweth. Loved her!

this post is overkill. this was so long ago. forget about it and enjoy the show for what it is.
Avenue Q is a great show that deserved to beat Wicked for Best Musical. It also won because Urinetown didn't, and a lot of voters felt it was time to "vote their hearts" and not their wallets.
I think part of why Avenue Q won was because the Theatre Wing wanted to encourage more 'little shows' and new composers... I mean, think about it. Shows that normally win the Tony Award are big smash-hit spectacles like Hairspray, Spamalot, The Producers, and... well... Wicked. Therefore people think that in order to be a success on Broadway you need to have these huge, elaborate shows... it must be very discouraging to young composers knowing not many producers are going to take a chance on a small-scale show. So I think part of what was going through the minds of the voters was 'This will show everyone that yeah, you can take a small show by and starring a bunch of unknowns and have it be a success.'

maybe because Avenue Q is a million times better and more original? hmmm... yes!

don't get mad at me, but this is what i HEARD
well, i heard that ave. q won because it was supposed to go on tour, and rake in lots of money, and wicked wasn't supposed to go on tour. and that's why it was named best musical, so when it went on tour, it would attract more people. but in the end, wicked went on tour, and ave. q didn't. and that the people of ave. q got in a lot of trouble.
that's just what i HEARD.

Does it really matter? and I love how Elphaba237484745847464674745846474847 is basing all this on the recording.
She saw the show a few weeks ago and really loved it. Now she has the cast recording. Cut her a slight break. While she probably should have taken the time to read the board and see how it works, she is just enthusiastic. She is interested and she is learning.
