True about the commercialism. Wicked so far "only" has one cast recording, when by this time in the Les Miz timeline, they probably had three, with one currently being recorded.
Beergoggles, that hurt to read!
Les Mis was commercialized because it was/is a great show.
Wicked is because it starred Kristin Chenoweth and was another member of the OZ family.
Case in Point: Les Miz is better and Idina is hot.

I'm a huge Wicked fan, but Les Mis is such a better novel than WICKED. It has so much heart and soul.
This is like comparing Gypsy to The Lion King. It's such a random and stupid comparison.
I agree. You can't just compare the two. And how would we decide anyway? On what grounds? Each musical means something different to everyone.
Let's be honest...in some aspects Les Mis is better and in some, yes, *gasp* Wicked is better.

Okay, but I don't understand why these people can RELATE to Elphaba. Here are some questions for em':
1.) Are you green?
2.) Can you fly?
If you answered no to one of those questions...then you CAN'T relate to Elphaba. I'm sorry.

Wait - on what levels is Wicked better than Les Mis.
Not the score.
Not the book.
Not the spectacle.

Well, even still. If you aren't green and you can't fly, you can't relate to Elphaba.

Wow. This has got to be one of the worst comparisons I've ever seen.
It boggles me that these people actually believe Wicked can be compared to Les Mis--and exceed its greatness, at that! Completely appalling.
Les Mis is the better show (and the better novel), hands down.
And back on the revolution topic, the "uprising" that takes place in Les Mis is based on the July Revolution of 1832. It was very small. Basically, the whole premise of the "revolution" was that a bunch of college students were way too bored. I'm not even sure if they had a real point to building a barricade; they had no idea what the hell they were doing. Hugo glorified it for the sake of his political/social commentary.
The point is, these students were smacked down hard by my man, Eugene Francois Vidocq of the French secret police. It's a shame his name isn't well-known--he's the real-life master of disguise Sherlock Holmes was based off.

I don't find LES MIS to be commercial.
The problem with WICKED is that...
SPOILER***
At the end of the musical, Elphaba lives. In the novel and in the 100 years of OZ we know and love, she doesn't. Her living is a way to let audiences leave feeling a tad bit better that they spend 100$ for something feel-good. The show sells out on ALL levels of fluff. WICKED could have been a masterpiece like LES MIS. It could have been life-altering. It could have been heart-breaking. It had the potential to be dark, mysterious, sexy, gothic, murderous, thrilling and... well....
it wasn't. It sold out. It went to please audiences instead of intrigue audiences. LES MIS on the otherhand, covered classes, death, prostitution, child labor, abuse, war, obsession, greed. LES MIS knew that it wouldn't sell to children. It was okay with that. But it is so incredibly stunning that it sold to them anyway.
