I just think if they had her moving around more, or even doing a 'Peter Pan' fly--it would have just looked hokey. I'm not saying that the moment as it is is the most sophisticated possibility, but the way Peter flies in 'Pan' works becase of the story--the musical is a true fairytale story where we all expect and love that type of flying, as it is what makes the most sense. For the one moment in Wicked--it makes sense to have her simply rise and belt it out--this is her diva/comingofage/determination/findingherself moment, where the focus is what shes saying, not how shes moving. I'm not trying to make the moment seem more intelligent than it is, but i think it makes sense that they just move her to a powerful position instead of fiddling with silly flying tricks.

I totally agreee VoiceofReason, if there were anything more with 'fancy flying tricks' going on the audience would be confused and not able to comprehend the very simple lyrics.

someone may have said this but..

So we have the technology right? they tried to do an effect with Elphaba sitting on the broom as she flies in, for No Good Deed, guess what?? Stephanie got hurt..and is still recovering :) I like the effect in DG just fine, especially if it keeps the girls who do it from getting hurt.

I realize the effect was cut, but how did she fly in in NGD?

I have only seen the tour in Chicago and it was not in the production.

I saw Derrick Williams as Fiyero and he is not in any way, shape, or form effeminate! I found him to be very masculine and effective in the role! As for the Elphaba's flying, when it works properly it is very effective--I've seen the show three times and it never fails to give me goosebumps. The "special effect" is the emotions conjured by the final moments of Act I. "Defying Gravity" ranks with the best Act I closers ever!

hehe- I was thinking about what someone said(jokingly!) on the last page about the DG effect not working because it wouldn't close around their waist- when Stephanie was explaining it in the Chicago news clip I couldn't believe how small of a space that was, and she is SKINNY, but that thing locked in pretty darn close around her, and I was wondering how that works when she has the costume on and everything. I know that's probably not the reason, but still- how funny would it be if she was like "Yeah, I had a big dinner so I'm not going to be able to defy gravity tonight because I don't think I'll be able to fit in the cherry picker." *burp*
teehee!

My personal opinion about the scene is that it was actually done quite tastefully. It's already been mentioned that the scene is not actually about the effects, but the emotions, and I agree fully. Obviously the broom is an essential part of the scene, but really if you listen to the lyrics, perhaps this is deeper than we're looking. This scene is about Elphaba's independence and her letting go of the idealistic par of her. The fact that the broom is there is one thing, but the fact that she is flying at all is the real plot point. This scene is more about Elphaba declairing her independence than making a cool picture. Personally, when I first saw it in previews before the hype and stuff I was in the mid-mezzanine to the side and I thought it was the most adrenaline-pumping scene I'd seen in a while. It's become real easy to criticize after it's been broken down and analyzed and looked at a hundred times, but when I think of how it made me feel when it was just raw and new, and how just listening to it makes me feel, I don't think that's rivaled by "I'm Flying" in Peter Pan. I think so many people have accepted the fact that it's a "hit" musical and call it a teeny-bopper show, that they don't see these little things that are actually much deeper than some people care to look.

I hold a degree in Musical Theatre from Montclair State University. It is useless. Now I'm funny for money. Oh, and I sing.

The first time I saw Idina fly in Defying Gravity I was so amazed. As many have said here, the lighting, singing, music, fog, and just sheer drama of the act 1 finale had be sucked in and I wasn't looking anywhere but at Idina. Since I have now see the show 4 more times (in NY only... I'm seeing it in Chicago and San Fran in September) the flying sequence has lost a little bit of it's appeal, but I still think it's great. It isn't about how she's flying or the fact she's holding thr broom... it's just the drama of everything leading up to that point and the vocals at that point in the song.

"I totally agreee VoiceofReason, if there were anything more with 'fancy flying tricks' going on the audience would be confused and not able to comprehend the very simple lyrics."

Exactly one of the reasons I dislike the show so much. none of the depth of the book - only "very simple lyrics" geared to a majority of the ticket buying public. She's a frigging WITCH for chrissakes - SHE SHOULD FLY. There is no magic in the show at all - and thats what people expect.

"I don't really get the ending, all i can go with is when after several months,Judith saw Pat sang, and later she kissed him on the toilet, after that the story back to where Pat went down from the stage after he'd sung, and he went to the italian lady.I just don't get it,what Judith exatcly meant when he kissed Pat that she had seen, and did Pat end up together with The Italian Lady? Please help me,thank u very much!" Quote from someone on IMDB in reference to a movie he/she didn't understand. Such grammar!

This reminds me of one time when I saw MISS SAIGON in NYC and the helicopter never came down at the end of the "Nightmare" sequence.

What was funny, is that after the show, two women sitting behind me got up and said, "For all the talk of the helicopter, I don't see what's so big about it..." They never even realized that what they saw was not supposed to happen.

I think the same thing can be said of "Defying Gravity." She almost didn't fly, and I was upset because I knew she was supposed to. But if I had no idea she was supposed to, I don't know that I would have noticed!

Whoever said that the song isn't about flying is correct. If you compltely understnad the show, and not the whole oo they were friends!, the song has to do with diversity, not flying.

I agree with the people who like Derrick Williams. The ALAYM w/ Steph was almost porny.

Adam Lambert is freaking awesome as fiyero. I saw him go his first night, and I liked him better than Norbert. And he's really nice too.

I can't believe the flying broke. The song really doesn't work w/ out it. C'mon, give the Wicked people some credit, the machine is slightly more complicated than a cherry picker.

Sufinchica, the cancellation line only has about 5 or 6 tickets per show usualy. You might want ot try one of the various scalper sites for tickets. They'll be expensive, but you can go see the show.
