Wicked- No Flying for Dame.

First of all.. it is so freaking hot in the Pantages theater. We were all prespiring heavily during the show as was everyone around us. Stephanie was fantastic. Not only a incredible singer but a wonderful actress. ( she reminds me of a cross between Celine Dion and Cher). kendra Kassebaum was very good. She gave a funny "performance". At times a little too heavy on the shtick. Loved Carol Kane and David Garrison. Much better than their New York counterparts. Would you believe the flying mechanism during Gravity didn't work tonight? I think something must have been wrong with her harness or something. Because we saw her attempting to hook up to the contraption and then just stepping forward and singing the song. The audience knew too. Either everyone was expecting it or they just sensed something else was supose to happen. Hated Fiyero. He is so miscast. He was very effeminate. Thats it. I am tired. I am gong to bed.

I thought that I was the only one who thought that about Stephanie, the whole Cher and Celine Dion thing.

Sam rubin just mentoned on the radio that he was there last night and the flying didn't work.

Enough with the freaking Celine reference. I only saw her in the show last night.

Anyone else attend a performance where something didnt work? When the flying didn't work last night you kind of realized what a cheap gimmick it is. It sort of put the whole evening in perspective.

Funny about Mr. Williams. When we saw him in the NY production over a year ago we noticed that he was a bit effeminate. And he was not playing a lead part at the time. He stood out a bit.

Oh that really sucks the flying didn't work - not only for the audience but that must be really frustrating for the actors to know the audience feels cheated...I'm assuming they did, right? Did you hear any comments during intermission? Any words about it at the stage door?

Hey - I felt cheated when the flying WORKED...its so lame.
"I don't really get the ending,all i can go with is when after several months,Judith saw Pat sang,and later she kissed him on the toilet,after that the story back to where Pat went down from the stage after he'd sung,and he went to the italian lady.I just don't get it,what Judith exatcly meant when he kissed Pat that she had seen,and did Pat end up together with The Italian Lady?Please help me,thank u very much!" Quote from someone on IMDB in reference to a movie he/she didn't understand. Such grammar!

You say that as if it is a GOOD thing...

There was a discussion of the special effects in some other thread and I was attacked when I said they looked cheap. The bubble and the flying...how easy are these things to pull off and yet they seem to be breaking down quite a bit. I mean it's a freaking cherry picker with fabric attatched, for crying out loud.

The flying effect is cool when you're looking straight at Elphaba, but if you're looking at her from either side it looks like she's coming out of a cuckoo clock to tell everyone what time it is ("Time for an intermission!")

Redhot and Sueleen, you have a right to your opinions of not being impressed by the effect.

....I don't pretend to know how "hard" or "easy" it is to pull this off. Since you seem to be more technologically aware of it's simplicity perhaps you can enlighten us. I happen to think it's a little more complicated than you state but I've never been good at engineering.

I've always felt that she should be sitting on the broom, not waving it around. If it's the broom that's making her fly and she's holding it in her hand, then it should be all the way over her head and she should be dangling from it.

To put it simply, Popular, you know those things that the guys use to fix the lights before a show? You know, the things that are used everyday to repair telephone wires and street lights? That is what she is standing on. "Wow, Look! She is "FLYING!!"
People have been flying on stage for decades with a better effect than that which is used at the end of Act I of WICKED. When Sandy Duncan flew out over the audience in Peter Pan...THAT was spectacular!

Oh, and Hannah, I thought the same thing, too.

Sueleen, I don't think even Stephanie buys what she's trying to sell in that number. There's that news piece from Chicago (I believe) about the flying technique where she explains how it works and she even mentions holding the broom in her hand . . . "since the broom gives me power, I pass it back and forth in my hand to transfer the power of flight . . ." something like that. I think it's the justification she gives herself for why she's not sitting on the thing.

Hanna - I agree completely - and with today's technology - she could easily have sat on the broom and lifted off - even over the audience's heads, how cool would that be? but they settled for such a lame affect - it is just so obvious that she's standing on/or attached to something that simply lifts her straight up into the air - it's just boring. (but then, I found the whole show boring, after having read the book)

Hottie (sorry, I HAD to say it), I was also BLOWN away by the book and disappointed by the translation into a show. I'm currently reading "Son of a Witch" . . . so far it's REALLY enjoyable.

i think it looks pretty cool... but that's just my oppinion. Doens't Laura Michelle fly over the audience in Poppins?

It seems the flying machine has broken down quite a bit lately. I think this is the 3rd or 4th time it's happened on the tour, and I know it broke down last week in NY.

Hanna - I liked the dark quality of the book, which was completely lost in the production - I think Schwartz sold out for a more commercially appealing piece. Give me a dark passionate show anyday (I'm a true Sondheim lover) and I'll choose that over shows that pander to the masses. My favorite show currently playing is The Light In The Piazza, and you can't call THAT fluff!

The flying effect is definitely not effective from the lottery tickets. It's much more effective a little further back (in the center).
