Ok, I only have the CD to 'Wicked' but what I gather from that, and from most of you, is that there is flying taking place during 'Defying Gravity'. So do you think they would do this on the Tonys?

I'm almost positive that they chose this number in order to showcase the 'spectacle' aspect of the show, which leads me to believe that their will be a levititation of sorts in Radio City on June 6th.

Yay !! Defying Gravity is defintely more Idina's song than it is Kristin's. Oh well, I'll take it, because it's one of the best songs in the show. :)

Posted: 5/26/04 at 8:45pmI think they're doing some dialogue with Chenoweth and Menzel first to lead into the number, in order to showcase them both.

Posted: 5/26/04 at 10:06pmI hope they do some dialogue, it adds so much to the scene. Does anyone know what the time limit for the performances is? Because I don't see them adding much dialogue if the time limit is short. Whatever they do, Idina will really shine here, and I'm glad for that.

Eh, CBS may be tough on shows that are closed, but they might indulge Wicked and give them an extra minute or two.
It's all about the green stuff that makes the world go 'round.

In one of the articles about it, they said CBS usually gives the suspected winner an extra minute or two. That's what they'll probably do for Wicked.

I like "Defying Gravity" (although I don't think it's the best song of the show), but I wish they would've done something a bit more ensemble-oriented, like "What Is This Feeling".
Edited to say:
I thought this might be of interest. It's an article on how the producers decided which song each show would perform.

Posted: 5/26/04 at 10:30pmWhy would you want them to do something more ensemble-oriented? Wicked's ensemble is one of the worst I've ever heard.
#11re: 'Wicked' performance on Tonys
Posted: 5/26/04 at 10:38pmI would've liked them to do "For Good" or "What is this feeling?"
#12re: 'Wicked' performance on Tonys
Posted: 5/26/04 at 10:46pmI like that they are doing "Defying Gravity". I think it is the climax of the show and plays a huge part. Plus, it really shows off their voices. Any the time limit is four minutes, although they may extend it. I can't wait!

Posted: 5/26/04 at 10:56pmMy question is will Idina be in full makeup for this? I've been wondering that for a while.
#14re: 'Wicked' performance on Tonys
Posted: 5/26/04 at 10:57pmhaha, that would be quite interesting. i don't think so though :)

I agree that the ensemble and the ensemble numbers are what I dislike the most about Wicked,
1) Since it's nominated for Best Show, shouldn't it showcase as many actors as possible? (I probably didn't use the right word in choosing "ensemble" - I mean like the major characters.)
2) "Defying Gravity" isn't the show's best song. I personally think Fiyero and Elphie's love song is (I'm going dumb - I don't remember the name) - but "What Is This Feeling" is a song that is enjoyable even without seeing the show. And it's funnier. (However, if they actually make Idina fly OVER the audience and not just, like, be raised ABOVE the audience, I will be very keen on seeing Defying Gravity.)

I thought I dina's makeup was very easy to get on and off so who knows.
Isn't it like watercolor paints or something. I think that what they said, but you don't need the green. That's what suspension of belief is all about.

Posted: 5/27/04 at 7:03amShe has to shower to get it off, so unless she's going to make her speech (assuming she wins) in green, I doubt she'll have it for the performance.

In terms of whether or not she will be 'greenified':
Though it matters not to me either way, I think they might have her in the green. Though I agree that for this song especially it isn't completely necessary (whereas if they had done 'What is this feeling' it would have been needed to a certain degree), I think they might have her in green anyway. It takes a short while to put on (I think in the NYTimes article she said they can do it in 15/20 minutes) and they could probably minimize some of it. On the other hand, unless Wicked performed first (highly unlikely) it is true that it would be difficult for her to get the makeup off and shower before some of the major awards are announced, but seeing as how the green kind of spurs why she is who she is, I think they might at least want it on her face and hands...
But we shall see soon enough!!

Posted: 5/27/04 at 9:05amShe'll wear the makeup. It'sa non-issue. There's no way they are going to sell this show about the most famous witch in fiction and cinematic history without showing her to be green. The green witch is the centerpiece of the tale. Either the number will be nearer the end, allowing Menzel to change into it, or early, allowing her to change out. Think how many times we've seen actors in costume backstage when their cateogry is announced. She's at least a serious contender, and it would only enhance the show's sell-job to have her accept a Tony in full Elphaba drag.

Posted: 5/27/04 at 9:46amIt's simple. Wicked will perform in the first 30 mins of the presentation and as the Best Actress In A Musical isn't announced until near the end she'll have a good hour to clean up. No problem.

Posted: 5/27/04 at 12:00pmI'm really excited to see the performance, since Defying Gravity is by far my favorite song in the show. Yea, the flying effect is kinda lame, but I don't care as long as I get to hear Idina's AMAZING voice. I am a little surprised that they picked a song that Kristin plays such a...small part in. I thought they would pick something like "For Good" which really showcases both their voices, since they're both up for Best Actress. Oh well, I'm rooting for Idina anyway ; )

Posted: 5/27/04 at 1:50pmLast year Harvey Fierstein wore full make up. Idina will probably wear it too. And like a few posters have said before, they will do what's best to sell the show.

I am THRILLED that they chose Defying Gravity...I was afraid they would do One Short Day, like they did in the Macy's Day Parade.
Also, Elphie wears pan-cake make-up which (witch?) is relatively easy to work with.
I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE TONY'S!!!!
