Composer Frank Wildhorn has joined the creative team of Chimney Town the Musical, the theatrical adaptation of Poupelle of Chimney Town, the book-turned-anime film from Akihiro Nishino. Details regarding an upcoming full-scale production of the show, with score by Wildhorn, will be revealed shortly.

Wildhorn's post-comeback comeback being almost exclusively anime adaptations fascinates me.

I'm assuming this will be in English and targeting an English language market first? Does anyone have any details?

His last two anime musicals were written and workshopped in English, then translated to Japanese and premiered overseas.

A version of this show has been around for a few years already. They even officially released a full pro-shot for free online, with English subtitles, of the older version (which I think has songs by Japanese composer/s, not by Wildhorn): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NYPy4vh3_dQ . (Not sure if that will be taken down eventually.)

According to the website at https://musical.chimney.town/, when put through Google Translate, "From the beginning, the aim of this work was to be performed around the world, starting with Broadway in New York, and a company has now been established in New York, where they are continuing to update the work and work with local creators as they work towards a Broadway performance."

Incidentally, I think the story has a Halloween theme, which is timely. Here's a song from the old version on that theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EpCjYh2bNfw .

Loved Wildhorn’s score for Death Note, so am interested to see how how this turns out.

Interesting that he’s has been doing a lot of anime adaptations lately. However it doesn’t seem like anime is an area a lot of American theater writers are flocking to, despite its exploding popularity in the US. Broadway always seems to be a decade or two behind pop culture trends.

So in that light, it kinda makes sense for him to carve out a niche for himself since no other prominent theater composers / writers are in that space now.
