I saw the original many times and talked to some of the cast, I never understood BielbeResteStay, till Joel Grey broke it down for me.

It is already translated...he's singing to a mixed audience of German, French and English speakers. The first word/phrase is in German followed by French and finally in English.

He repeats every phrase three times, the last time in English.

Just wanted to echo how brilliant the lyrics are. For anyone who has been on one of those guided tours of a tourist attraction in Europe where the guide is speaking in a continuous stream of alternating languages, Wilkommen brings back that sensation and immediately sets the locale.

They aren't literal translations, but they are what a host would say appropriately in each language.

For example "Je suis enchanté" literally means "I am delighted" (or "I am enchanted"), not "happy to see you," but he is using common expressions in each of the three languages to convey the same thing.

EDIT: Or as Olive would say in Bullets Over Broadway, "Charmed, charmed, charmed ..."

There is only two cases that aren't in a set of 3.

"Wir sagen" in German. "We say"
"Und sagen" in German. "And say"

Does anyone know why it says „glücklich zu sehen“? It is the literal translation of „happy to see you“ but German speakers  would not say that. They would say „Schön, Sie zu sehen“ which is sometimes used in German versions of the show. 

 

I’m just wondering if there is any reason behind this or if it’s just a translation error. And if it’s an error, how can such an obvious mistake stay in the central lyrics of the show for over 50 years? I am confused.

Because it scans better.  He’s a native English speaker writing for English speaking audiences, not Germans.
