Maybe you're mistaking the boot of the Stratford production (which has been on YouTube for years now) for Broadway?
I listened to an audience audio bootleg of the Broadway production as a kid and I recall thinking it would be overwhelming to have a clear recording of it.
Then I got a hold of the Broadway soundboard a few years later and I felt like miracles do happen.
Then I discovered the Stratford production in decent quality uploaded in its entirety on YouTube. My prayers had been answered.
Then I saw the first act boot of the Broadway production and wanted to see more even though the video quality and angle of the camera were so crappy, Betty Buckley was represented by a triangular black blob and Linzi a white fuzzy marshmellowman.
One of the most um...thrilling Carrie, the musical bootleg moments was watching the completely unnecessary and enormously complex white staircase descend from the rafters above, and for the first time, TOTALLY understanding how Barbara Cook almost had her head lopped off.
