I know raul's performance has been muched praised, I think that is because he is performing a brilliant Sondheim score, but Cerveris' reviews are stellar and his performance is more recent and he is a much better singer(IMO).
Will he steal some of Raul's thunder?
It deserves discussion.

Before this gets sexual..
I certainly hope so. Esparza is doing a fantastic job as Bobby - but Cerveris is doing an amazing job as the legendary composer. Even Brantley recognized the difficulty of making an audience sympathetic towards a reserved and "unknowable" man.

Posted: 5/4/07 at 1:06amI think this year's race is going to be really tight. Pierce, Esparza, and Cerveris. I think it's a toss up as to who'll win.

It's going to be impossible to choose. We'll see. I can't wait until the Tonys this year though!

There are 5 slots for Best Actor, so short and Lee will probably fill them out.
I don't think it's really a race between Cerveris and Esparza...
I think it's really between Pierce and Esparza.

Raul's eyes say "I'm not so sure", but Michael's say "yes yes yes".

I respected Pierce's performance, it was fine for what it was, but to me the show and the role were just bland. I feel it's definitely between Cerveris and Esparza, and at this point, there's no telling which of the two it will be. An attractive race, to say the least

Posted: 5/4/07 at 5:16amEsparza and Cerveris went head to head just a few years ago, where they were both the frontrunners in their category. Esparza won the Drama Desk, and Cerveris won the Tony. This year Esparza will win the Tony.

I can't stand when people repeatedly make these estimation lists, but I'm doing it again, so deal:
Now that we've seen all of the performances this season,
Best Leading Actor in a Musical Nominees:
Esparza
Pierce
Cerveris
Short
Groff

Both, Norn.
It's a three way between Cerveris, Esparza and Pierce. (Listed alphabetically so as not to show a preference.)

Posted: 5/4/07 at 8:23amI really don't see how Pierce can be looked at as a threat in any way. He'll definitely be nominated, but the role is just so underwhelming that I can't imagine him taking the Tony. At all. I haven't seen Cerveris yet, but it looks so far that Esparza's got it in the bag.

*cries* I can hardly stand it. I am guessing it's going to be:
Martin Short
Michael Cerveris
Raul Esparza
Gavin Lee
David Hyde Pierce
And I'm almost afraid Pierce is gonna take the award, but I'm really hoping for Raul Esparza to win.
ETA: However, if Gavin Lee or Michael Cerveris won, I wouldn't be *too* dissapointed! :)

Posted: 5/4/07 at 8:37amIt's a definite possibility. I saw Company and thought it was a mediocore production - keeping in mind that I saw the original and there's no comparison. The best I can say is I enjoyed the music. IMHO (and now I'm gonna get myself in serious trouble) Esparza's performance is over-rated. On the other hand, I thought Cerveris' performance was wonderful, but wasn't fond of the show. When I saw LM however, it was still 3 hours long.
