But of a different sort...

Which is um... unusual over there.
And I'm still laughing over the Ruprecht!Mark comment, because it is SO TRUE. It's a disease.

LOL! Oh, burn.
I've never seen Rent on Broadway, but it always amuses me whenever there's a cast change, because inevitably, they're no stranger to the show.

This is where I come in with being not intelligent with Broadway...I don't know if you have to be to see this in people...but...I remember a long time ago, when Matt was just coming in I was hearing that so many people were excited to have him playing Mark. I didn't hear it here, as I didn't know this place existed, but I just heard it around. --- Now, I tend to always like the "Marks" -- I used to love Trey! But I wasn't extremely impressed with Matt as Mark. --- However, I mean, how are you getting a completely weirded out vibe from him compared to other Marks? I mean, saying he is the horny, teenaged-boy version....I've only seen him as Mark once...is it just the way he was walking around on stage and stuff? Because I didn't pick up on any of that, I just thought he was kind of...dull in a way. But how far can they stray if they are all doing the same lines? Is it a personal thing? Because a lot of people seem to not care for Matt.
I'm just confused.

First two nights he does ok, third night he starts picking his nose and trying to push over the manger because he is bored.

That's the difference, I think.

About Will --- I went to his site, I don't think I know him. Would I know him if I didn't know any other Broadway stuff? It doesn't appear that he's been in many films or anything. --- When was he Roger before? And...why are you guys all nutty over him? What made him better than others?
Posted: 11/30/05 at 3:32pm
And lots of people liked him in other stuff, so there ya go.

Very far.
Will - while I have never seen his Roger (since he never was fulltime Roger, I only saw his Steve) REALLY blew me away in Lennon... just... very passionate, beautiful voice - and he's quite focused onstage which will be welcome at the Nederlander.

Age is easier to change or disguise onstage, but don't doubt the ability of the camera. Sure, the characters are meant to be young bohemians--but with the exception of Mimi, we don't know how young "young" actually is, so I don't see any real discrepancy. If Adam, Will, or anyone else for that matter can read and interpret and perform the material in a way that allows Roger to come through as ROGER, regardless of any age, then that is what really counts--not the birth certificate.

I feel like Matt portrays the character of Mark differently, and I agree with his portrayal.... Mark is the loner, the outsider, the person looking in on the action... and Matt Caplan, yes when he wants to, portrays this dramatic side... but he gets all this crap about playing things for jokes... but Mark HAS to have this kind of goofy, funny side, because why else would Roger and Collins and everyone else keep him around? Mark is a funny character... Anthony does this in the movie perfectly... but I feel like because Anthony is so good, people think that Matt Caplan is just wrong and bad. Mark IS a horny twenty year old... and Matt Caplan decided to play that up, which I think is admirable, and different from the many Anthony Rapp imitators out there.
I'm not saying that Caplan isn't bored, because he does look it, although when I last saw the show in September he was pretty on.... he needs a break, but I don't think his character is bad, i think its actually pretty good.

and is it wrong for me to want someone to kidnap Matt so they can put Colin in as Mark?
Oh, and Justin makes me very happy.
I may have to go back after the New Year, cause I haven't gone since last january (i'm not a fan of the cary/karmine/matt combo)

sigh.....how is he bringing it out in Mark more than others? He does all the same moves as everyone else...how far can he stray? I know I keep asking that...but i'm seriously interested to know. Obviously, I'm aware that some people that take on a role are better or worse than others based on vocal or acting talent, but that aside, what does he do? If the only thing he is doing is bringing out one dimension of Mark more than others, than that may be a good thing...he's bringing something new and fresh to the character. But as I also said, when I saw Matt I thought he was a bit goofy. And now that you guys mention it, I remember him trying to make a joke out of something...but can't remember what it was. Maybe it's just that he's not the best actor.
The thing is, if his understudy (Colin?) is better at performing Mark than Matt is, then why don't they replace Matt! I mean why don't they realize that there is something with Matt. ---- Sorry for the 21 questions in this post, I'm just really interested in what you all think.
Generally, I just wanted to make a few comments about Mark. I think that Mark as a character has a lot of growing up to do in the story, I think he is learning how to life his life by learning from others...this is pretty evident, with him always filming people and whatnot. He's trying to figure out how to best live his life, and at times he can be immature and insecure, but he's also *trying* to grow up and be responsible. There's so much more to him, I know...I think I just really f'ing love Mark as a character because I can relate so much to him. From him loving film, to wanting to make an important piece of work, to not knowing how to become the person he wants to be....there's a lot that's special about Mark, even if he doesn't change that much throughout the story.

I think Em just put into words what exactly it was that bothered me when I saw Rent back in October. Even though it was my first experience of seeing the show, somehow I knew there was something not quite right with the idea of the Mark character humping the table during La Vie Boheme and rubbing the camera against Maureen's ass during Happy New Year. I'm glad to see that I'm not alone in disliking Matt's portrayal of Mark, and I hope that he's taking the day off when I see the show again in January.

but they all do that.
